There are some movies we enjoy watching over and over again, and Catch Me If You Can is certainly one of them. It’s no wonder it’s ranked as one of the best movies of all time.
Rated 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not surprising to see the Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks movie sitting on the site’s best movies of all time. It comes in at No. 236, but at least it makes it, which is more than can be said for the 1999 Tom Hanks movie The Green Mile. It makes it higher up on the IMDb best movies list, sitting at No. 173.
The movie itself is based on a true story: the story of Frank Abagnale, played by DiCaprio. As a teenager, Abagnale turned to petty theft and fraud, and that grew considerably over the years, eventually leading to his arrest. The con man shared that the 2002 Steven Spielberg movie was about 80% accurate compared to his autobiography, and there are debates over some of the stories that have been told over the years.
In fact, it was one particular moment from Abagnale’s tale that made Spielberg realize he needed to make the movie. He shared in a 2003 interview that, “Getting out of the Miami International Airport with 120 FBI agents scouring that one venue–that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. And when I read that I said ˜Aw. Man if that’s true, I gotta make this picture.”
The con man does make an appearance in the movie, though. He’s actually the arresting officer in Montrichard, France. It makes sense since the story is about his life — not only how he got away with the fraud for so long, but also how he was eventually caught and would go on to help the FBI catch others.
In the end, Catch Me If You Can, which features Ellen Pompeo before her Grey’s Anatomy debut, did better with critics than with the audience. The audience rating sits at 89%, which is still respectable for a movie that is a lot of fun. It did nearly ruin a career, though, with Amy Adams not landing a role for a year after this 2002 release — much to Spielberg’s surprise. She even nearly quit acting because of it, until she landed Junebug in 2005.
The great news is that you can watch the movie about an FBI agent tirelessly tracking down a young fugitive across the world — and yes, filming involved moving to different locations — for free. Catch Me If You Can is available to stream on Tubi, as well as being available on Paramount+ with a subscription.
