SwimSwam Pulse is a recurring feature tracking and analyzing the results of our periodic A3 Performance Polls. You can cast your vote in our newest poll on the SwimSwam homepage, about halfway down the page on the right side.
Our most recent poll asked SwimSwam readers for their opinion on the new Olympic swimming schedule:
Question: What is your biggest takeaway from the new Olympic schedule?
RESULTS
200 semis should be removed – 33.7% Stroke 50s complicated everything – 25.8% Don’t like the women’s 200 fly/800 free conflicting for McIntosh – 13.5% Don’t like the men’s 200 back/200 IM still conflicting – 10.6% No issues with it – 10.1% Preferred the men’s 1500 on the final day – 6.3%The new Olympic swimming schedule was released last week, and with it came several changes from the lineup we saw in Paris, which was the first time swimming expanded to nine days at the Games.
After the men’s 800 free, women’s 1500 free and the mixed 4×100 medley relay were added to the Olympic program for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, the LA Games in 2028 will see an influx of six new events, with the men’s and women’s 50 back, breast and fly added to the schedule.
With these additions, the Olympic swimming schedule underwent significant changes. Though the opening day is essentially the same as it was in Paris, with the men’s 50 fly and women’s 50 back added in, everything is different from there.
We asked SwimSwam readers what their biggest takeaway was from the new schedule, and opinions seem to lean towards things being a bit too convoluted. The number of events is at an all-time high, and with the addition of stroke 50s, there will be 18 more heats during finals sessions in 2028 than there were in 2024, but the number of sessions is the same.
The calls for the removal of semi-finals in 200-meter events have been getting louder in recent years as new races are being added to major international programs, and we’ve seen what it would look like without them at the Short Course World Championships, and no one seems to miss them.
In the poll, more than a third of voters, 33.7%, said they wanted 200 semis taken out of the schedule. If they were to be removed, finals schedules would all of a sudden look a bit less jam-packed, and it would perhaps open the door for things to be moved around a little bit more to avoid some of the scheduling conflicts that exist.
More than a quarter of voters, 25.8%, simply say that adding stroke 50s complicated everything, seemingly indicating they’d rather have the Paris schedule without stroke 50s than what we’ve got for LA.
Looking at some of the specific event conflicts, the women’s 200 fly and 800 free will now coincide on the final night of racing, likely ending any chance of a Katie Ledecky versus Summer McIntosh showdown in the 800. McIntosh will most likely opt to defend her Olympic title in the 200 fly, which she has consistently said is her favorite event.
A certain section of readers, 13.5%, said their biggest takeaway from the schedule was that they didn’t like the 200 fly/800 free conflict for McIntosh, though the two events also clashed during the Paris Olympics, just on Day 6 instead of 9.
Ten-and-a-half percent of readers are still bemoaning the fact that the men’s 200 back and 200 IM, two events that are common for swimmers to specialize in together, still clash, while just over 10% said they have no issues with it.
