Sport by : (Football Whispers) -

Liverpool have been blessed with a remarkable collection of world-class players over the years, but not every signing has gone according to plan.

Some arrived at Anfield with hefty price tags and huge expectations, while others were regarded as exciting talents who simply could not find their feet on Merseyside.

For every Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk or Sadio Mane, there have been deals that left Liverpool wondering what might have been. Transfer success is never guaranteed, and even the biggest clubs can get their recruitment wrong.

Here, FootballWhispers counts down Liverpool's five worst signings of the Premier League era.

When Liverpool lost Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, they turned to Alberto Aquilani in the hope that the Italian could fill the enormous void left in midfield.

The Reds paid £17m to bring him in from Roma, but the move quickly became one of the club's more disappointing pieces of business.

Aquilani arrived with a reputation for technical quality, but persistent injury problems made it difficult for him to build any momentum at Anfield. When he did get on the pitch, he struggled to adapt to the relentless pace and physical demands of the Premier League.

The Italian managed just 28 appearances for Liverpool, scoring two goals, falling well short of the expectations that accompanied his arrival.

Aquilani subsequently spent time on loan at Juventus and AC Milan before eventually returning to Serie A with Fiorentina, where he was far more comfortable. For Liverpool, however, the big investment never came close to producing the impact they had hoped for.
