The Denver Broncos were back on the practice field on Monday after they lost in Friday’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers. For Broncos head coach Sean Payton, there’s always a race and a sense of urgency to improve, and Monday’s practice was the first step.

Just days after losing their first preseason game in three years, the Denver Broncos were back on the practice field on Monday as they continued to focus on installation, competition, and correction.

One thing head coach Sean Payton references often is that the game tape isn’t always as good as it feels or as bad as it feels, but there’s plenty of room for improvement and correction before the team plays their first regular-season game against the Kansas City Chiefs four weeks from now.

“Just a lot of things that I think we’ve got to be able to clean up,” Payton said. “Like always, if you went back to Atlanta, there’s some things that weren’t maybe as good as you thought, and then there were some good things the other night. Early on, particularly, it was good to see some guys getting involved early. So, we’re back at it. Cleaning it up. Minnesota, Friday.”

This summer was the first time the Broncos opted not to conduct or participate in any joint training camp practices, but they’ve gotten a lot of great work with the offense going against the defense and vice versa. When it comes to improvement, Payton was asked whether a preseason loss like Friday’s to the Packers could serve as a wake-up call.

“I always feel like during the course of training camp, you have this stretch and you have some peaks and you just hope that you’re moving the needle the right direction when you have those days,” Payton said. “Some days it might be better for the defense, not as good for the offense or vice versa. All that, trying to keep in mind starting faster. I don’t think we’ve really started fast here in my three years. I think that’s going to be important.”

The Broncos have four more weeks to get ready for their Week 1 regular season opener. In that stretch, they’ll play a final preseason game this week, trim their roster from 90 players to 53, and then will practice leading up to September 14th.

Broncos news and notes

After leaving Friday’s game with a rib injury and not returning, Denver Broncos cornerback Riley Moss was spotted on the team’s side field where he did rehab work and conditioning before he observed the rest of practice. Payton said after practice that Riley’s injury isn’t serious and that they’re just being smart with it.

Joining Moss on the side field was outside linebacker Drew Sanders, offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo (PUP), center Alex Forsyth, and tight end Caleb Lohner — who made his first appearance on the side field all training camp as he’s tried to make his way back from an undisclosed lower extremity injury.

Running back RJ Harvey went and did work on the side field after the team completed their 7-on-7 period.

Some good news… wide receiver Marvin Mims and center Luke Wattenberg were full participants in practice and took their first team snaps in over two weeks.

They’ll be in full pads on Tuesday and Wednesday.
