Corey Murphey broke two marathon swimming records en route to becoming only the fourth person ever to complete a double-crossing of the length of Lake Tahoe in late July. Swimming 21.3 miles each way to reach 42.6 miles total, Murphey broke the record times for both the north-to-south directional length and double-length.
Murphey began her trek in Incline Village on July 21st, swimming to Camp Richardson and reaching the turnaround point in exactly 10 hours to break the north-to-south directional length record by 50 minutes. The record was last set by Joe Locke in 2012.
Taking a short break on shore, Murphey was back in the water and on her way back to Camp Incline about nine minutes after reaching Camp Richardson. She completed the full 42.6 mile swim in 20 hours and 54 minutes, annihilating the previous record time by over an hour and a half, which was previously held by Sarah Thomas from 2013.
In an interview with the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Murphey reflected on her accomplishment of this feat.
“There are times I feel terrible, but then I just think, who gets to swim in the middle of Tahoe and look up and see the Milky Way in the middle of the night? It’s a very rare experience,” Murphey said.

Murphey began her swim at around 8:00pm on July 17th, swimming through the night under a glowing moon and coming ashore at Camp Richardson with the sunrise the next morning.
Competition rules prevented Murphey from spending more than 10 minutes outside of the water, giving her just a few minutes to eat a couple snacks before starting the second leg of the swim.
Murphey was followed by a small support team throughout her journey, which included her mom, Jill, who paddled in a kayak alongside her daughter for around 11 hours.
“My mom does all these swims with me, so it’s really special that I get to share it with the person I love the most in the world,” Murphey told the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
Other members of the support crew included Sarah Thomas, who was the first person to complete a four-way crossing of the English Channel in 2019.
Thomas and Murphey are the only two women to have ever completed a double-length crossing of Lake Tahoe.
Murphey is pursuing a PhD in computer science at the University of Colorado Boulder and lives in Niwot, Colorado.
