The Lifetime Northern California Swim Club played host to the sixth annual Thanksgiving Thousand ‘Swim to Feed the Hungry’ meet, running as a charity meet that brings in youth area swimmers for 500-yard or 1000-yard swimming events, while doubling as a fundraiser that raised $31,000 for Raley’s Food For Families.
The first edition of the event began in 2020, created by Jesuit High School Senior Cooper Zarro, with the intent to donate all proceeds to the organization that feeds in-need families in Sacramento, Calif.
With the $31,000 total from this year’s event, the total over the last six years has now surpassed $100,000.
The meet is run as a regularly sanctioned USA Swimming meet, with all meet fees, entry fees, merchandise sales, and other miscellaneous donations going towards the fundraiser. Last year, the event brought in a record $33,000 for families in need in Sacramento.
This year’s event had 93 11 and over swimmers race in the 1000 free, and 10 10 and under swimmers race the 500 free, bringing the total number to 103 participants.
Leading the men’s 1000 free was Life Time’s Jordan Ragland, turning in the fastest overall time in 10:17.17. Ragland’s teammate, Lillian Cunningham, was the fastest female finisher in 11:12.43.
As for the 500 free, Life Times’ Ari Piyaratna (6:22.89) was the fastest of the boys’ competitors, while Brooke Curley (6:49.55) was the top finisher for the girls.
