Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Perennial contenders — and longtime rivals — University and Eaton positioned themselves within one win of qualifying for the finals during the second of three days of high school girls volleyball state tournament action Friday at the Denver Coliseum.

Meanwhile, two other local teams — Windsor and Resurrection Christian — kept their seasons alive but were left with some work to do if they were going to join the Bulldogs and Reds in the semifinals Saturday afternoon.

Competition resumed Saturday morning, leading up to the finals at 6 p.m.

Most of action on Saturday was set to take place after the Tribune’s copy deadlines for Sunday’s paper.

Class 4A

University Bulldogs

As the third seed in the 12-team 4A tournament, the Bulldogs very much had the swagger of a title favorite through the first two days of the tournament.

After surviving a five-set second-round scare against No. 11 Cheyenne Mountain in the second round Thursday, University shook off a 25-19 first-set loss to second-seeded Windsor, claiming the final three sets — 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 — in the championship bracket’s third round Friday.

With that win, the Bulldogs (22-5) advanced to a semifinals match at 2 p.m. Saturday. They were set to face whichever team prevailed in a 9:30 a.m. match between No. 4 Lutheran (20-7) and No. 5 Lewis-Palmer (19-9).

University sophomore Delaney Lauer had a monstrous outing in the big win Friday against the Wizards. She recorded team-highs of 22 kills and 16 digs, to go with an ace.

Fellow standout sophomore Kenley Rudiger had a team-high 46 assists, along with three blocks, an ace and nine digs. Senior Jordan Halley had a solid all-around outing with 11 kills, two aces, three blocks and five digs.

Windsor Wizards

Windsor, one of the favorites in 4A all season, faced a precarious predicament after its third-round loss to University on Friday.

The second-seeded Wizards (19-8) fell to the elimination bracket’s third round where they were slated to face eighth-seeded Battle Mountain (24-4) at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The winner of that match would punch its ticket to the semifinals where it would face top-seeded Montrose (24-3) at noon.

Junior Jayda Nothdurft led Windsor against University on Friday with a team-high 18 kills to go with a block. Junior Brooke Zink had a team-high 43 assists along with two blocks and nine digs. Junior Avery Smiley led the Wizards’ back-row defense with 24 digs to go with a team-high three aces.

Eaton Reds

Eaton, the third seed in 3A, has won seven state titles in the past 14 seasons alone.

As action concluded Friday night, the Reds were again in prime position to contend Saturday.

Eaton defeated seventh-seeded Classical Academy in four sets — 25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 25-18 — in the winners bracket’s third round Friday.

With that win, the Reds (23-4) punched their ticket to the semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday where they were set to face whichever team emerged from a 9:30 a.m. match between No. 2 Resurrection Christian (25-3) and No. 12 The Village (20-8), which was the state champion a year ago.

Seniors Madi Smith and Chloe Crider had 14 and 11 kills, respectively, for Eaton in its win against Classical Academy on Friday.

Smith also tied fellow senior Hayden Logan for the team-high in digs with 10. Senior Trinity Salberg and junior Skyelyn Lefever had 19 and 14 assists, respectively.

Resurrection Christian Cougars

After a loss on Thursday that could have been crippling toward Resurrection Christian’s state title hopes, the second-seeded Cougars showed some resolve Friday.

Resurrection Christian opened the day with a 3-0 win against ninth-seeded Gunnison, 25-11, 25-19, 25-15, in the elimination bracket’s first round. Hours later, the Cougars swept No. 5 Stargate School, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament.

With the two emphatic wins, Resurrection Christian (25-3) placed itself in an elimination bracket third round match, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, against No. 12 The Village (20-8) with a spot opposite of Eaton in the 2 p.m. semifinals at stake.

It was a strong response after the Cougars fell in five sets — 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-17, 15-13 — against The Classical Academy in the winners bracket second round Thursday.

Prairie Mustangs

Needing to be perfect in the final couple days of the three-day 1A state tournament, 10th-seeded Prairie was unable to extend its season past the second round of the elimination bracket’s second round Friday.

The Mustangs began their day by beating No. 9 Evangel Christian Academy (20-6) in a four-set elimination bracket first round match, 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-19.

Then were in prime position to go 2-0 on the day but ultimately fell to No. 12 Caliche (17-9) in a five-set elimination bracket second round match, 15-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-11.

The Mustangs ended their season with a 20-8 record.

Prairie found itself in the elimination bracket after being swept by second-seeded McClave, 25-16, 25-10, 25-19, in the second round Thursday.
