LAKEWOOD — Greeley Central is headed to its first championship game in boys soccer.
All it took for the Wildcats was surviving a high-shooting, wildly-entertaining, physical and mostly one-sided Class 4A semifinal in which they were often on their heels at Trailblazer Stadium.
Oh … and goalkeeper Robert Humphrey. It took a lot of him.
Greeley Central’s senior keeper made several key saves though regulation and two overtimes Wednesday, none better than an acrobatic series of stops in the final minutes of the second OT. It set up penalty kicks, where second-seeded Silver Creek missed twice and Humphrey scored what would be the decisive penalty in the No. 6 Wildcats’ 0-0, 5-4 shootout win.
After the Raptors’ final try sailed above goal, Humphrey’s teammates buried him in a dog pile. Eventually, the whole team got to its feet and made way to its adoring fanbase, who’d strung along the field’s fence line.
They hugged, slapped hands and generally just hollered in joy.

We’re just supporting Greeley.”
For the Raptors, the impressive feat of reaching a second straight semifinals comes with pain and a lot of what ifs.
They controlled play most of the night against the Wildcats but never could finish. Chances went either high or just wide. And when a ball was on frame, Humphrey got in the way.
“It was intense and it was scary seeing how many chances they were getting against us,” Central’s senior captain Joel Gonzalez admitted. “They just couldn’t capitalize.”
In penalties, Silver Creek senior captains Rien Pacaro, Kaden Riedel and Ryan Courtney all connected before GK Cooper Preston’s third-round save gave the Raptors the advantage.

“You let teams hang around and there you go,” Silver Creek coach Rob Johnson said. “We did some good things and we just didn’t put the ball in the net. So, that’s the hardest part.”
Greeley Central will face No. 1 Mullen in the 4A final on Saturday at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
