Greeley Walks will host its fourth annual Day of Remembrance ceremony Sunday in honor of those killed in traffic crashes.
The event will run from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Greeley Recreation Center, 651 10th Ave., and will feature messages from Weld County Transportation Planning Manager Evan Pinkham and family members of those who have recently been killed in traffic crashes. Representatives from both the Greeley and Evans police departments will speak as well.
This year’s theme, “Safe Speeds Save Lives” is a reminder to slow down and take extra precautions on the road, Greeley Walks founder Jim Riesberg said.
Last year, 11 drivers — including three motorcyclists — and three pedestrians died on Greeley’s roads, the city said. In Weld County, there were 67 traffic fatalities 2024, according to the county.
Statewide, that number grows to 689 traffic deaths, per the Colorado Department of Transportation. Of those, 237 were due to excessive speed. In the past five years, that number multiplies to 1,274 people, CDOT reported.
Speeding drivers are particularly dangerous for bicyclists in pedestrians, especially in more urban areas. Since 2016, bicyclist deaths have increased 34% statewide, according to CDOT.
World Day of Remembrance is a global event to remember those killed and seriously injured on the world’s roads. It aims to provide a platform for victims and their families to remember all people impacted, as well as acknowledging the work of emergency services and promote evidence-based actions to prevent further traffic deaths, Riesberg said.
Along with Sunday’s event, Greeley and Evans city councils will read a proclamation in honor of World Day of Remembrance at their meetings on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
