No. 4 Alabama won in a 20-9 victory over the LSU Tigers Saturday night at Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
While the victory marked eight straight for the Crimson Tide, there was still a glaring issue: the run game.
Head coach Kalen DeBoer said that the rushing attack “needs to be better,” that his players need to “do a better job blocking” and that his running backs need to “do a good job of being physical with the ball in our hands.”
The unit is ranked No. 114 in the country and has just one game in which a player rushed for 100 yards, Jam Miller versus Vanderbilt. The Crimson Tide rushing attack averages just 3.6 yards per carry and has looked flat and unsure of itself at times this season.
“We have to have confidence running the ball,” quarterback Ty Simpson said. “I feel like we’re not very confident that we can run the ball very well right now. It’s all mental really.”
On Saturday, running back Daniel Hill was the team’s leading rusher with just 21 yards and 3 yards per carry, a similar statline to most games throughout this season, but head coach Kalen DeBoer said he was just happy to come away with the victory.
“We found a way to win,” he said. “That’s what matters.”
He followed that up by noting the importance of getting the run game figured out and balancing out that part of the offense with the team’s dynamic passing attack.
“We got to do a better job giving lanes for the running backs to hit it confidently and hit it hard,” DeBoer said. “We certainly got to be better than what we were.”
Alabama’s next task will be the No. 8 rush defense in the nation in the 12th ranked Oklahoma Sooners. That game will take place Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT from Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium and can be streamed on ABC.
