Melissa Joan Hart is remembering a scary moment when she was ill while filming Sabrina the Teenage Witch. The actress, who played Sabrina Spellman on the series, opened up about how she was “puking off camera” and in fear of passing out during the production of the show’s season 3 finale, “The Good, the Bad, and the Luau,” in 1999.
“I do remember with this episode in particular on that volcano, I was vomiting my brains out,” Hart, 50, told Entertainment Weekly during a reunion celebrating the show’s 30th anniversary. “And I asked our key grip to stand behind me in case I passed out and fell off because we were out in the sun.”
“I’m puking off camera. I’m standing there trying to play two of me,” she continued. “So when I see that I’m like, ‘Oh, God, are you okay?’ I think of little me like, ‘Are you all right?’”
The episode followed Sabrina when she went to Hawaii for a Spellman family reunion. During the trip, she learns the family secret that they’re all born with a twin and hers is a girl named Katrina, who Hart also portrayed. Sabrina and Katrina then have to decide which one of them is the evil twin and Katrina gives her evil self away by pushing Sabrina into an active volcano.
Despite being sick while filming it, Hart still thinks fondly about the episode. “I always ask kids at any Comic Con, I say, ‘Do you know the Spellman family secret?’” she said. “I test people by how well they know the show if they know the Spellman family secret.”
Hart also talked about how she loved that the show, which ran for seven seasons, always pushed her character into outlandish situations.
“I always say that Sabrina was kind of a tough character to play for me because she wasn’t daring and adventurous. She was trying to disappear and fade into the woodwork,” she admitted. “But she, luckily, got to do these wild, crazy, weird things which kept it really, really interesting for me.”
“So I think the fact that Sabrina got to be an evil twin, or got to be Alice in Wonderland, or got to be a trapeze artist, kept it really interesting,” she added.
