Instant Bears Player Grades: What Just Happened? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

That was one of the wildest Bears games I’ve seen in some time. I rewrote this post about four times.

Bears Instant Grades

Offense

QB Caleb Williams | A

I think he was good, not great, for most of the game. His accuracy needs to improve, but he seemed to have a good command of the offense today against a bad defense. At times, the pocket collapsed on his blind side too quickly, which caused some happy feet and threw off his timing, leading to some inaccurate throws.

However, he threw an absolute dart to Colston Loveland when the game seemed over and won the Bears the ballgame.

RB Kyle Monangai | A+

I know the Bengals’ defense is bad, but it seems like the Bears found a guy here. What a game from the rookie out of Rutgers.

WR DJ Moore | B

Two touchdowns in this one, but none receiving. Wild stat line for DJ Moore, but one of his best performances of the season.

WR Rome Odunze | D

Too. Many. Drops.

WR Olamide Zaccheaus | B

Really solid and found the endzone. Feels like the offense opens up a lot more when he’s involved.

TE Colston Loveland | A

Loveland has been getting better each week, and it looked like there was a bit more of an effort to involve him. Keep feeding him in the red zone, please. He made an unbelievable effort on the last touchdown to win the Bears the football game.

Offensive Line | C+

Seemed like Theo Benedet had a bad day on the left side and was giving up too much ground. It was part of the reason why it felt like Caleb had happy feet at times. However, the run blocking was quite good.

Defense

Defensive Line | B

They got some pressure early, and Montez Sweat should have had a strip sack that got overturned. They seemed to fall off in the second half a bit, but Austin Booker came up with the huge play to force a turnover in the 4th and turned things back around. Sweat was excellent in this one.

Linebackers | B

A little hard to grade. Cincy didn’t really try running the ball much, but Tremaine Edmunds made a big play when needed.

Secondary | F

A truly awful performance.

Special Teams

K Cairo Santos | F

This one isn’t close if he doesn’t go 0-2 from 47 yards out.

P Tory Taylor | A

A 71-yard punt in the first half! That’s the Tory Taylor I remember from Iowa!

Bears Coaching

Ben Johnson | B+

Ben was in his bag. Trick plays, run/pass balance, better redzone execution, and play calling, in my opinion. This was a weird game, and the Bears could have been disheartened after the first half, going into the locker room trailing despite dominating time of possession and controlling the game offensively. They weren’t, though.

The game never should have reached the point where a last-second TD was needed to win, though. He needs to really examine his special teams unit and coordinator.

Dennis Allen | D

Had this at a B until the collapse. Dennis Allen’s defense got bailed out by Caleb Williams and Colston Loveland.

Special Teams | F

Jake Moody should be the team’s kicker tomorrow. And the kickoff team was pathetic. Special teams is the reason the Bears almost lost—awful execution in every aspect of the third phase of the game.
