Cubs Lose a Coach, MLBPA Blues, World Series, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

It absolutely sucks that my son has a peanut allergy. No question about it. However, there is one small side benefit after he complete trick or treat: I made out like a bandit last night. Reese and Butterfinger and Snickers everywhere, and I *have to* take them. For safety.

The Cubs have yet to lose bench coach Ryan Flaherty to an open managerial gig, but they are indeed losing a coach off the staff:

From @PJ_Mooney and @sahadevsharma:Cubs coach Alex Smith is leaving to become the Tigers’ vice president of baseball strategy t.co/WgKj4ZpvAD

— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) October 29, 2025 From the article: “[Alex] Smith helped oversee the club’s data development and information-sharing process, working well with both Counsell and former Cubs manager David Ross across the past three seasons …. Smith, who maintained a steady presence on the field and in the clubhouse as part of the Cubs’ uniformed personnel, will now work in Detroit’s front office.” Smith is just the latest in a relatively long line of former Cubs execs and coaches who’ve made their way into the Detroit front office, from President Scott Harris to GM Jeff Greenberg to Director of Player Development Shane Farrell. Because Smith’s role was relatively behind the scenes, it’s hard to speculate on how/if the Cubs will replace him. They may view it as an opportunity to shuffle roles, promote from within, or seek out an addition to Craig Counsell’s staff. The fact that Smith is going straight into the Tigers’ front office hints at the type of role he was providing, which may have been particularly valuable in an organization like the Cubs, where they like to have a tight and seamless relationship between the front office and the coaching staff. Speaking of which: we haven’t heard much about the Cubs’ front office having any turnover. Like with the coaching staff, this is roughly the time of year you’d start hearing about possible departures and possible additions, but there hasn’t been much said on either side of that ledger. Wild report at ESPN about an MLBPA-adjacent organization:

Players Way, a youth-baseball company owned by the MLBPA, has spent millions of dollars despite hosting limited events in its six years of existence. Now it's under investigation by the federal authorities. Story, free at ESPN, with @DVNJr: t.co/rWmezYxRKs

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 30, 2025 Reading the report, it all does sound a little fishy. Though I have to reiterate that any story that comes out over the next 14 months about the MLBPA, the leadership, the owners, agents, free agency, etc., etc., all has to be filtered through the lens of the upcoming CBA fight. Sowing a little discord in the union – and frustration with the leadership – would perhaps be helpful for some of the parties. I would hope so:

— MLB Trade Rumors (@mlbtraderumors) October 31, 2025 More on the Nationals’ surprising decision to go super young with their managerial hire, pairing him with new baseball operations chief Paul Toboni, who is himself just two years older than Blake Butera:

News: The Nationals are hiring Blake Butera, who at 33 will be the youngest MLB manager in more than half a century. Details on his background, what made him a strong candidate and why he was the choice, free at ESPN: t.co/1RGh7i0L5x

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 30, 2025 Maybe the idea is that, if everything goes sideways on the roster, these guys are still young enough to suit up and contribute on the field while they’re under contract anyway. In all seriousness, I do like the swing. Experience is a significant asset in these kinds of roles, but it’s hardly the only factor.
