Penfield parents voice concerns over school safety and communication at packed board meeting ...Middle East

PENFIELD, N.Y. — A large number of parents attended the Penfield Board of Education meeting to express concerns about safety and communication within the district. This follows a threat made at an elementary school about a month ago, which state police investigated.

Becca Johnson, a parent, said, “When parents ask for more safety, we’re not asking for more enforcement. We’re actually asking for more connection.”

Parents were not allowed to voice their concerns at the previous board meeting, but they were given the opportunity at this one.

Sara Mayer-Fried, a parent and alumna, said she felt upset during the incident, but was satisfied with the communication at the time. “I got communication from the board via the parent portal. We got emails. I felt like they made themselves very accessible,” she said.

Tasha Potter from Penfield Central School District said communications were sent to families, faculty, and staff on the same day they were notified, September 18th. “On [September] 19th, once we had additional information, we communicated again with our faculty, our families, our community,” Potter added.

Mayer-Fried expressed a desire for more communication, saying, “No, I’d like more communication, but I think that that’s part of what tonight is.”

Tim Collins, another parent, said, “I think it’s crucial that the board listen to the community. So I think it’s smart they’re doing this because you can tell from how many people are here that there’s a lot of pent up need to express concerns or feelings or desires.”

A sheriff’s deputy at the meeting assured parents that if a threat presents itself, the public will be informed.

James Montanti, a parent and alumnus, advocated for armed officers in schools at all times. “I graduated in 2010. We had sheriffs around more often. I feel like maybe if we had a sheriff around at maybe each school, or someone that was stationary in there, that would be very helpful,” Montanti said.

The district announced that public comments will be allowed at future board meetings if speakers sign up and are approved beforehand.

The board also released a statement saying safety and security remain a priority for the district and it will continue to listen and work with the community going forward.
