Report: Fire and explosion risk at warehouse storing 180,000 gallons of expired hand sanitizer ...Middle East

ROMULUS, N.Y. — The Environmental Protection Agency has released a summary report detailing the risks and demands for a warehouse in Seneca County storing thousands of gallons of flammable hand sanitizer. The report also reveals that taxpayers may end up covering the cost to clear it out.

News10NBC first reported on the warehouse, located on the site of the former Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, in late September. It is currently storing 180,000 gallons of expired hand sanitizer stacked inside, with additional containers of smaller bottles stored outside.

According to the EPA’s initial report, “Due to the large quantities of flammable materials and lack of any site management, fire suppression equipment, or smoke/fire detection equipment, there is a threat of a fire and/or explosion.” The report also warns that any release of contaminants could impact nearby homes and potentially contaminate waterways, including Seneca Lake.

The warehouse was rented by New Age Renewable Energy, run by Eduard Zaydman. Zaydman also ran Eco Operations in Gorham, the site of a massive warehouse fire in August where hand sanitizer was being stored without any permits. Fearing a repeat of the Gorham incident, the state and Seneca County issued violation notices to Zaydman for the Romulus warehouse and ordered him to properly empty it.

An EPA representative told News10NBC that the owner has taken steps to secure the building, locked the outdoor materials in a storage container, and installed security cameras with 24/7 monitoring that includes law enforcement. However, it remains unclear how long Zaydman has to remove the hand sanitizer.

The report shows the EPA has a budget of $700,000 to pay for the removal of the hand sanitizer in the event Zaydman can’t or won’t do it himself.

News10NBC reached out to the DEC to find out if they have received an answer from Zaydman to their violations notice. While they didn’t directly answer that question, a spokesperson said their cease and desist order remains in place and they are working to identify if there are other storage sites.
