Protests continue as the family of a woman shot by police in suburban Mundelein demands the firing of the officer responsible.
The scene unfolded as Mundelein officials aimed to hold a board meeting Thursday, but protests disrupted the proceedings for the second time in a week as the family of Mary Alice Love continues to call for more action in the case.
The protests have intensified after the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office announced last week that criminal charges would not be filed against the officer involved.
Love’s family said she was experiencing a mental health crisis when she was shot and killed by a Mundelein police officer in May.
Her family is demanding the firing of the officer involved and they are calling for change in how calls like this are handled.
Tensions were high at the board meeting in Mundelein on Thursday afternoon as the father of Mary Alice Love and her supporters came face to face with police.
The crowd interrupted board members as they attempted to carry out the meeting for the second time this week.
On Monday, they protested for nearly two hours, forcing the board to cancel the meeting and reschedule it for Thursday. The village called for enhanced security, including more officers to keep the peace.
“This family has been peaceful, I’ve warned you at the last meeting a storm is coming that storm is coming because people are frustrated,” said Kevin O’Connor, Love’s family attorney.
“As long as I’m alive, I will be fighting for Mary Alice Love every single day,” said another relative.
“We will not stop, no way, we will not stop,” said Vuyani, Wakaba, Mary Alice’s Love brother-in-law.
“You’ve seen the video, I’ve seen it, the community seen it,” said another member of the community. “Step up and do the right thing.”
Family and supporters said they want the officer involved off the force and calls for mental health and de-escalation training for officers.
“We didn’t ask them for anything other than fire the officer, change their policies and re-train their officers, (but) so far it’s fallen on deaf ears,” said Johnny Love, Mary Alice Love’s father.
Bodycam video from May shows the fatal shooting and the moments where police said Love had two large knives as she approached a police officer. Police said a relative called 911 to report Love was suicidal.
Her family has since filed a federal lawsuit alleging wrongful death, excessive force and failed training.
“I re-live this that day every day but we would do what we need to do to make sure that there’s change and justice for all,” said Jeffry Love, Mary Alice Love’s mother. “Mary Alive’s life will not be in vain.”
Family said they’re still waiting for police to complete its administrative investigation into whether the office followed and acted within policy.
“It could happen to our family it could happen to another family,” said Johnny Love. “If nothing changes nothing changes.”
Board members called for a recess before resuming the meeting. Love’s family said they plan to attend every scheduled board meeting until the officer involved is fired.
The police department did not respond to our formal request for comment. The police chief at the meeting declined our request for an on-camera interview.
