FORT COLLINS —- “Today is about moving forward.”
That was the message relayed by Colorado State director of athletics John Weber at a press conference Monday on the heels of Sunday’s firing of head football coach Jay Norvell.
Norvell was let go after the Rams’ 31-19 loss to Hawaii on Saturday in which CSU fell to 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Mountain West Conference. Norvell was 18-26 in his three and a half years in Fort Collins.
It has not been the season CSU expected, and Saturday’s defeat was the last straw.
“Ultimately, progress was challenged and progress stalled at a very critical time for us as we ascend into the Pac-12,” Weber said. “And with that in mind, I made the decision that we needed a different direction of leadership as we move forward.”
Weber had announced in a news release Sunday that defensive coordinator Tyson Summers will finish the season as the team’s interim head coach.
The change comes as the Rams prepare for Saturday’s Border War game at Wyoming. CSU then has a bye week before hosting UNLV on Nov. 8.
“As we went through the season, we had starts and stops and we struggled against Hawaii to find our identity, to be able to move the ball that we needed to, in the way that we needed to,” Weber said. “It was an opportunity for us to get coach Summers focused on what the future of Colorado State is headed into the rivalry game.
“It also gives us an extra week as we head into the bye week to make sure that we are prepared from a recruiting perspective.”
Summers takes over the program after joining the CSU staff as its defensive coordinator last December when he replaced Freddie Banks, a longtime assistant under Norvell whose contract wasn’t renewed.

He has previous head coaching experience at Georgia Southern, where he led the team for two seasons. He has also been the defensive quality control coach at Georgia and the defensive coordinator at Colorado from 2019-2020.
“Coach summers has every authority to do what he feels necessary for us to finish the season strong,” Weber said. “I have complete faith in his ability to lead, to represent our university and to recruit to our program.”
Summers began his new duties Sunday, talking to Weber and Norvell, as well as the current coaching staff and players.
He is excited about the opportunity that has been presented to him.

But like I told our football team and like I’ve told our staff, I’m going to attack it like I attack everything. I’m very fortunate for this opportunity to lead and serve.
“I’ve never done anything in my life that I wasn’t trying to attack and win and be good at. I’m thrilled for the opportunity to lead and for the opportunity to serve and help these young men as best I can.”
Summers said he will remain the defensive play caller while turning offensive play calling over to tight ends coach Grant Chestnut.
With five games remaining on the Rams’ schedule, Summers still believes the team can do something special.
“We’ve got an opportunity to really do something special,” Summers said. “And I think that the opportunity that’s in front of us is something where we need to be, where our feet are, but having the turnaround that we’re looking forward to having is what we hope to be able to do.”
While Summers will finish out the season as the team’s interim coach, Weber said a national search for a head coach will begin immediately and CSU will partner with a premier search firm to identify the right coach to lead the program.
