Sherrill leading Ciattarelli by 6 points in NJ Senate race: Survey ...Middle East

News by : (The Hill) -

A new poll shows Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) has expanded her lead over Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli in the New Jersey gubernatorial race after last week’s contentious debate.

Quinnipiac University on Wednesday found 50 percent of likely voters support Sherrill compared to 44 percent who favor Ciattarelli. One percent each said they back candidates Vic Kaplan from the Libertarian Party and Joanne Kuniansky from the Socialist Workers Party.

“The raucous debates are done, the attack ads are everywhere, and the race is close, with Sherrill holding a slight advantage,” Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy said in a Wednesday statement accompanying the survey.

“As the clock ticks down to Election Day, voter enthusiasm will translate into turnout. For the moment, in that category, Ciattarelli has an edge," he added.

Ciattarelli’s voters appear more enthusiastic to cast a ballot for their candidate than Sherrill's supporters.

Ninety-one percent of planned Ciattarelli voters said they are either very enthusiastic or somewhat enthusiastic about supporting the candidate endorsed by President Trump, while 86 percent said they are either very enthusiastic or somewhat enthusiastic about voting for Sherrill.

Support for the two frontrunners is heavily divided by gender. A majority of women surveyed (57 percent) said they back Sherrill, while 53 percent of men said they are supporting Ciattarelli.

"While Jack Ciattarelli holds a fairly solid eleven percentage point lead among male voters, Mikie Sherrill has nearly double that lead with female voters," Malloy said.

Each candidate has experience in politics, but Sherrill’s time as a prosecutor and in Congress appears to resonate more heavily with voters. Forty-six percent of survey takers said Sherrill’s experience in Congress makes them think more favorably of her, 17 percent said it makes them think less favorably of her and 36 percent said it doesn't impact their perspective.

Meanwhile, the same share (46 percent) also said they view her career as a lawyer and prosecutor favorably, but 13 percent said it negatively skews their view of her.

Thirty-four percent of participants said Ciattarelli’s experience holding local political positions, including in the state assembly, makes them think more favorably of him, while 9 percent said it makes them think less favorably of him and 55 percent said it doesn't impact on their view. A larger share of respondents said Ciattarelli's two previous gubernatorial races in the state make them view him less favorably (23 percent) than more favorably (17 percent).

The Quinnipiac University poll reached 1,327 likely voters in New Jersey from Oct. 9-13 with a margin of error of 3.6 percentage points.
