The Blackhawks lost their first three games by one goal each. They were in each game, but couldn’t find a way to win in the end. Last night, they found a way to win. The Blackhawks killed off three penalties (yes, only three) and got the game-winning goal on a power play. Their defensive commitment was excellent. The goaltending was terrific. The effort was there for 60 minutes. And, against a team many are picking to make the playoffs this year, the Blackhawks emerged victorious. That’s good stuff.
I asked Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill what he thought of Artyom Levshunov‘s performance getting back into the lineup after a healthy scratch. He said he really liked his game last night, noting that Levshunov played to his strengths — skating, moving the puck, using his physical strength to control the puck. Perhaps the reset was a success. Blashill was also asked about his philosophy on skating seven defensemen last night (and, honestly, more frequently than we’re used to/expect). He was pretty candid with his answer, saying with young defensemen you don’t always know what you’re going to get. He likes having two right-handed defensemen to control the power play (Sam Rinzel and Levshunov) and two to work on the penalty kill (Connor Murphy, Louis Crevier). And it helps keep the minutes of Rinzel and Levshunov down a bit early in the season. So there might be more of a settling period where we see more frequent employment of 11-7 until the coaches are more comfortable with running six defensemen out there. I also asked Blashill for his perspective on the value Jason Dickinson provides when he’s healthy and in the lineup. Dickinson was absolutely the missing piece last night; he was back to playing at the Selke-caliber we saw in 2023-24. Dickinson is Blashill’s kind of player: he’s focused on process and details and driven to be excellent. It clicked last night in a big way, and Blashill was very complimentary of Dickinson’s performance. As has been the case when Blashill has been asked about Frank Nazar‘s offensive success early in the season, the head coach complimented that entire line. In this case, Ilya Mikheyev was the star of the night with two goals. He got the payoff. And Ryan Donato did some really good things on that line as well. I noted this in my postgame takeaways, but Colton Dach was a really effective physical force on the ice last night. — BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) October 14, 2025 I asked Dickinson how much it helps the confidence of the skaters to have a netminder like Spencer Knight playing as well as he did in the second period last night when things got off the rails a bit. A reminder: Kyle Davidson got Knight and a first-round pick from the Panthers for Seth Jones.Spencer Knight has saved 81 of 88 shots (.920 save percentage) in his first 3 starts this season for the Blackhawks.Dickinson: “He just keeps battling shot after shot. Having that in there gives you reassurance that when you mess up, you’re in good hands.”
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 14, 2025 Take this for whatever you will, but the Rockford IceHogs called up right-handed defenseman Tyson Feist from Indy on Monday. In the OHL, AJ Spellacy scored his first goal of the season for Windsor, but the Spitfires lost 4-3 to Oshawa in overtime. In the WHL, Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm scored his sixth goal of the season for Kamloops in Monday matinee action. He added an assist on the game-tying goal in the third period as Kamloops came back to beat Regina 4-3 in overtime.Laser Behm Nathan Behm gets Kamloops on the board first!@BlazerHockey | @NHLBlackhawks pic.twitter.com/0eTpzOUTr2
