Carl J. Carbon 1942-2025 ...Middle East

POLAND — Carl Joseph Carbon, 83, a child of God, passed away Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025.

He was born to Carl Patrick Carbon and Kathryn Adovasio Carbon on Sept. 27, 1942.

Carl grew up in Struthers and attended St. Nicholas grade school, Struthers High School, Class of 1961, and Youngstown College, where he made many lifelong friends. Carl was a guard on the football team at SHS; he loved football and was a Detroit Lions fan.

Carl developed a good work ethic from the young age of 12, when he helped his father at Oby’s Pawn Shop on East Federal Street, which is where he earned the nickname Oby. He shared many stories about life in Youngstown in the 1950s. Like so many, he worked at Youngstown Sheet & Tube, in the open hearth, until its closing in 1977. In 1978, he began his favorite job, maintenance foreman at RMI Titanium in Niles. He loved his work and the people he worked with so much that he inspired his brother Sam to work there, and they shared many years working together. His son, Frank, also joined the company, now known as Howmet. He had many RMI stories from the years there and picked up the habit of always using $2 bills for tipping and gifts — which he was fondly known for — until he retired in 2005.

While at Youngstown College, he met the love of his life, Mary Lou Pelly, and after Carl’s brief stay in the United States Marines, they were married on Aug. 20, 1966. During their 59 years of marriage, they created a beautiful family, including children, Carl (Melanie) Carbon, Marrissa (Dan) Patrone and Frank (Sharon) Carbon; and seven grandchildren, Gabriella, Gianna, Bianca, Massimo, Gregory, Graham and Ava.

Family was everything to Carl and Mary Lou. Carl was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, provider and protector for his family. He taught us how to live and how to die. He will be missed but will live forever in our memories and in our hearts.

He also leaves his siblings, Felix Carbon, Sam (Mary Lou) Carbon and Michele (Mark) Pease.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary; a brother, Michael; and his parents.

Carl was a “lifelong” Corvette guy. He bought a 1961 Corvette when he graduated from high school and a 1963 Corvette, which has become a family treasure. After a complete restoration, he showed it at car shows, and was a member of the Mahoning Valley Corvette Club and the National Corvette Restoration Society.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing and trap shooting. He was an avid trap shooter and loved Model 12 shotguns. He competed at the local, state and national levels and went to events in several states, including Hawaii. Some of his best friends were made through his sporting interests. He was a member of the Lowellville Rod and Gun Club and a lifelong member of the NRA.

Carl was an all-around good guy. He loved everyone and would do anything to help them. He was a good and faithful servant. He suffered from dementia and other health issues. During his “long goodbye,” he continued to show love, kindness and gratitude to everyone he encountered. He may not have known their name or relationship to him, but he knew their soul. He loved people and welcomed them with the biggest, brightest smile and often a kiss on the hand. His sense of humor and attitude of gratitude made caring for him easy. Carl was fortunate to receive excellent support and care in his home. The goal was to provide the quality of life that he deserved and a good death. His wife made it her mission to achieve this goal with the help of many.

We are grateful for Dr. Michael O’Brien and Dr. Charles Wilkins, Mahoning Valley Medical, and Traditions Health palliative and hospice care. We are especially thankful for Donna, RN, Andrea, Serenity and Ruthie, as well as Patrick, Sabrina, Crystal, Heidi, Ralph and Ebony, who have become family to us. We are grateful to God for sending us “good people.”

Family and friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2025, at Rossi & Santucci Funeral Home, 4221 Market St., Boardman.

Additional calling hours will be 10 to 10:50 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Basilica, 343 Via Mount Carmel, Youngstown, where a funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m., with the Very Rev.Monsignor John Zuraw J.C.L., V.G., as celebrant.
