The track reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks and became the band’s only U.S. No. 1 single. It has also earned a place among the best rock songs of all time, with Collider ranking it No. 17 on its list of the 25 Best Rock Songs of All Time.

Released on Guns N’ Roses’ debut album, Appetite for Destruction, “Sweet Child o’ Mine” helped change the band’s career. The album arrived in July 1987, but it did not become an instant success. It debuted at No. 182 on the Billboard 200, while the band’s first two singles, “It’s So Easy” and “Welcome To The Jungle,” made a limited impact at first.

The song climbed the charts and eventually reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Billboard lists its chart debut as June 25, 1988, with its peak coming on Sept. 10, 1988. It spent 24 weeks on the chart.

A major part of the song’s identity is Slash’s instantly recognizable opening guitar riff.

Axl Rose was upstairs listening to the musicians. The sound inspired him to write lyrics for the song, which he completed by the following afternoon.

Rose also looked to Lynyrd Skynyrd for inspiration. He wanted the song to have a heartfelt feeling that was different from the band’s usual image.

That became one of its memorable moments.

The song’s success also helped lift Appetite for Destruction. A year after “Sweet Child o’ Mine” reached No. 1, the album had sold eight million copies in the United States.

Collider placed “Sweet Child o’ Mine” at No. 17 on its list of the 25 Best Rock Songs of All Time. The ranking highlighted the combination of Slash’s opening riff, Axl Rose’s unmistakable voice and the band’s ability to deliver a powerful song about love.

Rolling Stone also included the song on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, placing it at No. 196 in 2004 and No. 88 in its 2021 list.
