IT’S ALL SQUARE NOW, BABY. The Cubs may have gone down 0-2 in the series, but now they’ve won back-to-back games to even up the NLDS.

Once again, the Cubs jumped early, this time on a three-run Ian Happ homer in the first inning. That actually would’ve been enough, because the Cubs pitching staff combined to turn in a shutout gem. Matthew Boyd, in particular, was outstanding for his 4.2 innings of work. A huge bounce-back for him and for the Cubs, and he’s the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game in this one.

The bullpen was brilliant from there, with the usual suspects getting the job done. Take a day to rest tomorrow, and then be ready on Saturday. Pretty sure you’ll all be needed again.

Everything after the first inning was gravy thanks to the pitching and defense.

The Cubs had a prime opportunity to add on in the 5th, loading the bases with one out, but Seiya Suzuki struck out against the guy he’d homered off of a couple games ago (Aaron Ashby), and then Ian Happ flied out. It felt for a moment like maybe it really was going to be another game where the Cubs scored in the first and then chilled out.

Thankfully, the Cubs managed to add a run in the 6th on a timely Matt Shaw hit, though, which means they CAN score runs outside of the first inning! That could be important going forward.

Kyle Tucker added a solo shot in the 7th, with Ian Happ juuuuust missing one thereafter (about an inch short), and Carson Kelly seemingly homering thereafter, but it was juuuuuust foul upon review. The Cubs were like three inches combined away from those homers. Michael Busch homered in the 8th to make up for it, I suppose.

Comfortable win for the Cubs overall, bringing the series to 2-2 and sending it back to Milwaukee for a decisive Game 5. Let’s freaking GO.
