The Cubs‘ minor league squads wrapped up their series with a pretty successful 4-1 day. The lone loss came in Game 2 of Myrtle Beach’s doubleheader, but other than that, there wasn’t a blemish on the board thanks to some timely hitting and quite a few solid pitching performances. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs closed out their series against the Gwinnett Stripers (Braves) with a 7-3 win on Sunday. Grant Kipp started on the mound for Iowa and put in a solid five innings of work, allowing a run on four hits and three walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
The Iowa offense struck first in this one with a three-run effort in the top of the first, highlighted by a Moises Ballesteros two-run blast, making it 2-0. Later in the frame, Kevin Alcántara brought around BJ Murray on a sac fly, increasing the advantage to 3-0. The lone run Kipp allowed came in the bottom of the first on a double-play ball with no outs and runners on the corners, but he nicely limited the damage.
In the fourth, Iowa added on to their lead. First, Brett Bateman singled home Owen Ayers, then Jonathan Long doubled in Bateman, making it 5-1. Two innings later, another RBI double from Long upped the score to 6-1. Iowa’s last run of the afternoon came on an Owen Ayers RBI single in the seventh, making it 7-1, and Iowa would go on to win 7-3.

The Smokies won a back-and-forth battle over the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels) in extra innings to close out their series last week. Ariel Armas got the Smokies on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the first. Two innings later, though, the Trash Pandas picked up a pair of runs off Kevin Valdez to take their first lead of the game. Those would be the only two runs Valdez allowed in five innings of work.
With the score the same in the sixth, Knoxville jumped back out in front. First, Carter Trice came up with an RBI single, then Edgar Alvarez doubled in a pair, bumping the advantage up to 4-2. The lead only lasted until the eighth, though, when Rocket City tagged Marino Santy for a pair to even up the score and send this game to extras.
In extra innings, Jefferson Rojas was the hero, belting a two-run blast in the top of the tenth, putting Knoxville ahead 6-4. The Trash Pandas went on to score the ghost runner in the bottom of the tenth, but Jacob Wallace closed the door, and the Smokies picked up the win.

The South Bend Cubs cruised to an 8-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers) on Sunday, despite a little bit of a hiccup in the sixth inning.
South Bend struck first in the top of the first when Angel Cepeda singled home Josiah Hartshorn, putting them on top 1-0. Two innings later, Hartshorn doubled in Kane Kepley, then Cepeda singled in a third run, making it 3-0 through three, which is how the score stayed until the sixth.
Starter Pierce Coppola was pulled after five very solid scoreless frames. JP Wheat came on to relieve him in the sixth, and ultimately gave the lead away on a two-run single, then a wild pitch. The score was 3-0 entering the top of the sixth, and 3-3 after that frame. Luckily, the Cubs offense picked up the pitching and bounced back immediately. Michael Hallquist doubled in a pair of runs, then Justin Stransky singled in another. Almost instantly, the three-run lead was back.
In the eighth, Stransky added some insurance with a two-run blast, giving the Cubs an 8-3 lead and the win.

The Pelicans played two with the Hickory Crawdads on Sunday after a wild weather week, and split the pair of matchups.
Game 1 was a low-scoring affair, especially early. The Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Derek Alcantara RBI single. That 1-0 lead help up as the score all the way until the top of the seventh, largely due to some great pitching. Riely Hunsaker tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk to go along with seven strikeouts.
In the seventh, Fernando Cruz belted a solo homer, making it 2-0. Then, Edward Vargas hit a two-run blast, doubling the lead to 4-0.
In the seventh, Anhuar Garcia allowed a solo home run, but that was the only run Hickory would get, and Myrtle Beach picked up a 4-1 win.

In Game 2, a big third inning for the Crawdads did the Pelicans in. Myrtle Beach again got on the board first, this time on a Derniche Valdez sacrifice fly in the first inning. But after a scoreless second, the Hickory bats broke out for a six-run effort off Jordan Henriquez and Henry Cone.
After they took the 6-1 lead, the Crawdads added two more in the fourth and one in the fifth, stretching the advantage all the way out to 9-1. Myrtle Beach added one more run in the seventh on a Gueri Lubo solo homer, but 9-2 stood up as the final score.
