2026 SOUTH AFRICAN SC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jolliffe Swimming Pool, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa SCM (25m) Meet Central SwimSwam Preview Day 1 Recap Results: Meet Mobile – SASC Swimming Champs (25m) PMBG 25Olympic champion Tatjana Smith (nee Schoenmaker) continued her successful comeback campaign at the 2026 South African Short Course Championships, putting her own 100m breaststroke national record on notice in her second individual event.
After hitting a lifetime best of 29.50 in the 50m breaststroke last night, 29-year-old Smith powered her way to a near-South African national record of 1:04.00 in the 100m sprint.
Opening in 30.09 and closing in 33.91, Smith’s time fell just .11 shy of the 1:03.89 national benchmark she put on the books at the 2020 edition of these championships.
This evening it was 17-year-old Chanel Veldsman who snagged the silver medal in 1:07.97, with Keira Van Heerden rounding out the podium in 1:08.63.
Smith is set to race the 200m breast in Pietermaritzburg as well, where she’ll try to complete her sweep of the discipline.
26-year-old Michael Houlie was in the water again as well, earning his second victory of the competition.
He followed up his 50m breast gold with a win in the 100m distance, stopping the clock at a mark of 57.30.
He led a trio of sub-minute performers, with Chris Smith next to the wall in 57.88, and Linus Kahl also under the barrier in 59.92.
Houlie’s performance checks in as a new PB, overtaking the 59.28 he established in 2018.

The women’s 50m freestyle saw 24-year-old Georgia Nel produce the quickest effort, notching 25.60 for gold. That held off Anieke Helmand, who hit the wall just a hair later in 25.65, while Tori Voke was also in the mix with a time of 25.68, good enough for bronze. Armand Landmann was too quick to catch in the men’s version of the splash n’ dash, posting 21.39 for a new lifetime best. He’s now South Africa’s 6th-fastest performer of all time in the event. Grace Morris turned in the sole time of the women’s 200m backstroke field under 2:10, registering 2:08.78 as the victor. Adrian Van Wyk topped the men’s 200m backstroke podium by over a second, nabbing gold in 1:56.39 in the race.
