Chicago Cubs Lineup (NLDS Game 4): Win Or Go Home … Again! ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

CUBS LINEUP — With their win over the Brewers last night, the Chicago Cubs bought themselves another day of life and another game at Wrigley Field. Unfortunately, this matchup features the Brewers best starter (Freddy Peralta) vs a categorically gassed Matthew Boyd (albeit one on normal rest!). That’s the bad news.

The good news is that IF the Cubs can win this game, all bets are off. Anything can happen in a Game 5, especially because the Brewers don’t really have another sure-fire, top-of-the-rotation starter like Peralta waiting for them on Saturday.

In other words, win this game, and you gotta feel pretty good about the Cubs chances, even with the series swinging back to Milwaukee. But again, this’ll be the toughest matchup and we’ll need the following Cubs lineup to score (1) more than four runs and (2) some runs after the first inning.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Michael Busch, 1B Nico Hoerner, 2B Kyle Tucker, DH Seiya Suzuki, RF Ian Happ, LF Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3B

Once again, there are no special adjustments to the Cubs lineup. This is the same group in the same order that Craig Counsell has rolled with in every postseason games (against RHP), including the first game against Peralta on Saturday.

Let’s hope they have more luck this time than they did over the weekend. If they don’t, that’s it.

GO CUBS.

Milwaukee Brewers Lineup:

TBA

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP

Oh, Matthew Boyd. What are we going to do with you?

Although Boyd’s Game 1 start against the Brewers was made worse (perhaps significantly worse) by an untimely and especially painful error from Nico Hoerner, there wasn’t much reason for optimism heading into that game.

At the time, Boyd, who is a categorically “gassed” pitcher, was coming in tired, on short rest, on the road (where he’s been worse) and against a team that had hit him well earlier in the year. All the cards were stacked against him … and it played out exactly as we feared.

Tonight is a little different, though. Boyd is back at Wrigley, he’s on normal rest, and he threw only 30 pitches on since Game 1 of the Wild Card round. So … he should be well rested. If he were ever going to turn back into first-half Matthew Boyd, tonight, with the season on the line against the Brewers best starter, would be the night.

Milwaukee Brewers: Freddy Peralta, RHP

Tonight will mark the SIXTH time the Chicago Cubs have faced Freddy Peralta this season. And although there has been some success against him in the past, he’s mostly been quite good against the Cubs (and everyone (because he’s a good pitcher)).

The one opening for optimism is the fact that Peralta is generally weaker throwing on four days’ rest (like he’ll pitch on tonight) as opposed to five, as CHGO pointed out earlier:

Freddy Peralta will start tonight. He’s been a stronger pitcher on 5-days rest vs. 4 days rest. ?️ 4-days: (12 games).235 BA.646 OPS115 (!) tOPS+5-days rest (17 games).170 BA96 tOPS+

He’s also WAY worse on the road (3.71 ERA) than he has been in Milwaukee (1.77 ERA) this year. But the flip side is that Wrigley Field has been playing pitcher-friendly, and Peralta has a 2.45 ERA there over two starts this season. So. Maybe not all that great.

Doesn’t hurt that the Cubs lineup just saw Peralta on Saturday, though. That tends to benefit hitters more than pitchers.
