Whew. Finally, some good news on the injury front in Chicago. A late-night report from CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz provides a clearer timeline on Luther Burden III’s return and some hope that he will be ready to go when the Bears take on the Panthers in Carolina in Week 1.
Zenitz said on Sunday that Burden is expected to miss “about a month,” and that the hope is he’ll be back and available for Chicago’s Week 1 contest against the Panthers.

Burden was injured on Saturday when he collided with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson in a 1-on-1 drill during practice at Halas Hall. Burden was seen limping off the field with a trainer, ending his day early and sending Bears fans into a panic.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Ian Rapoport said that Burden would miss “a little bit of time” with a groin injury.

Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn ImagesZentiz’s report is the most concrete and optimistic report we’ve received on the second-year wideout’s injury since it happened. It’s a bummer that he’ll likely miss the rest of training camp and most (if not all) of Chicago’s preseason schedule, which opens on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns. Still, Week 1 being in play should bring a sigh of relief to everyone.
I would imagine head coach Ben Johnson will be asked for an additional update on Burden at Halas Hall on Monday. We’ll see if Johnson’s estimate lines up with Zentiz’s.
Burden is coming off of a strong rookie season with the Bears where he recorded 47 catches, 652 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. His play down the stretch last season had fans dreaming of his future, especially after more targets opened up after DJ Moore’s trade to the Buffalo Bills.
By all accounts, the former Mizzou product had picked up where he left off last season before the injury. Multiple days of Bears camp through the first two weeks were highlighted by Burden’s growing comfort in the offense and rapport with quarterback Caleb Williams.
It’s worth pointing out that running back D’Andre Swift dealt with a nagging groin injury last season before Johnson decided to rest him in Chicago’s contest with the Bengals. After he returned, he continued on to a 1,000-yard season. Anyway, here’s to hoping we see Burden pick up where he left off again and hit the ground running in Week 1.
