She won the preliminary heats of the 100 free in 52.62, setting a new European Championship record.
Steenbergen, who is from the Netherlands, shaved .05 off the championship record in the event, which formerly belonged to Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom with a time of 52.67. Sjostrom first set the record in 2014 before tying the standard again in 2018.
Out in 25.12 on the first 50, Steenbergen had the fastest opening split across the board and secured an early lead in the final heat. She split 27.50 on the back half, which got her hand on the wall over a second ahead of runner-up Daria Klepikova (53.66) and was good enough to secure her the meet record.
Steenbergen’s performance this morning was about one second off her lifetime best from June, when she broke the world record in 51.68 at the 2026 Sette Colli Trophy. That occasion also saw her take down a Sjostrom-owned record, as the Swedish swimmer was the previous world record holder in the event.
