Another NBA GM Survey, Another Poor Showing for the Chicago Bulls ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

As the Chicago Bulls embark on another season, they remain a complete afterthought in the eyes of NBA executives.

The league released its annual GM Survey on Thursday morning. This year’s edition featured 49 individual questions that touch on players, coaches, style of play, and more. Every franchise is typically represented in one way or another, but the Chicago Bulls have barely scraped by in recent years. Heading into the 2024-5 campaign, they walked away with only two mentions. The team received a single vote for Josh Giddey being “the most underrated move of the offseason,” and Matas Buzelis earned a single vote when asked “which rookie will be the best player in the league in five years?”

With the organization adding more young talent and increasing their financial flexibility moving forward, one would have liked to see that the Bulls garner more respect heading into this season. For once, it feels like they at least have some semblance of a direction. However, with only a couple of weeks to go until opening night, the Bulls found themselves with less recognition than a season ago.

How Did the Chicago Bulls Fare in the Annual GM Survey?

Not a single Chicago Bulls player saw their name mentioned. The same can be said for Billy Donovan or Arturas Karnisovas. Instead, the only person with the Bulls to make an appearance was Wes Unseld Jr. – aka one of the team’s top assistant coaches.

The former head coach of the Washington Wizards earned at least one vote when asked for the NBA’s top assistant. He joined 13 others in the category, with Jeff Van Gundy (Clippers, 25 percent of votes) and Royal Ivey (Houston, 11 percent of votes) at the top. Former Chicago Bulls staffer Josh Longstaff, who is now with the Charlotte Hornets, also came up.

For what it’s worth, Unseld Jr. joined the Bulls last summer when head coach Billy Donovan decided to shake up his coaching staff. He was one of two higher-profile hires, as the Bulls were also able to add Dan Craig, who spent years with Erik Spoelstra in Miami and Ty Lue in Los Angeles. To be sure, Unseld Jr. feels worthy of some league-wide praise. He was a great assistant for many years in Denver and has been considered for a handful of head coach openings in the past. Nevertheless, it says a lot about your organization when an assistant coach is the only thing on a rival GM’s radar.

Does any of this mean I think the Chicago Bulls deserve more recognition? Eh, not necessarily. You have to live in the bed you’ve made, and the Bulls need to break out of Play-In mediocrity to gain respect from their peers. Likewise, if you simply scroll through the questions, it’s pretty darn hard to argue against the lack of Bulls acknowledgement.

Would it have been nice to see Matas Buzelis pop up in the “most likely to breakout” category? Absolutely, but it’s hard to refute any of the players who were listed instead. Might it have been good to see Billy Donovan, the third-longest tenured head coach, come up at all? Mhm, but that says more about the Bulls than the rest of the league. Shouldn’t the United Center at least get a call out for best home-court advantage? Not when you go 18-23!

I know, it’s depressing. Every year, this GM Survey is a sobering reminder of how far the Chicago Bulls have fallen. They remain one of the most irrelevant franchises in the NBA, and all fans can do is cross their fingers that something FINALLY changes over the next couple of months.

Save us, Matas Buzelis! You’re our only hope!
