Ginevra Taddeucci, a 29-year-old Italian open water force, earned the most prestigious individual gold medal of her career thus far today: a European Championships gold.
Taddeucci put on a master class of a 10k to add to an-already impressive resume that includes 2025 World Cup overall winner and an Olympic bronze. The latter was swum in the same venue as today: Paris’ Seine river. The veteran took it out with the front pack and never stood lower than 5th before kicking it into an unmatchable gear in the last 500 meters. The result was a nearly ten-second margin of victory, hitting the wall with a final time of 2:07:49.9
Though Taddeucci has had the best twelve months of her career and been practically unchallenged by fellow Europeans, she has fallen short of many golds due to the dominant Moesha Johnson of Australia. In fact, she won silver in all four open water events at the 2025 World Championships, losing to Johnson in two of them. With no Johnson in Paris, Taddeucci scored the biggest individual win of her career.
Coming in second place was Hungary’s Viktoria Mihalyvari. Taddeucci and Mihalyvari swapped places from the 2025 Stari Grad Championships, in which the Hungarian won the 10k and the Italian finished runner-up. Mihalyvari’s final time registered at 2:07:59.6. She also swam a smart race, leading for most of the first half and relinquishing to no one except Taddeucci in the end. The Italians put two on the podium with Linda Caponi. The 27-year-old Caponi is certainly a surprise name on the podium. She spent most of her career as a mid-distance pool freestyler, and her best world cup 10k position ever is 9th place earlier this year in Egypt. Italy will surely be celebrating this breakout race and 1-3 finish. Like the men’s race, times were much slower than we typically say elite 10ks take.
Caponi handily beat out more recognized open water names Klaudia Tarasiewicz (Poland) and Angela Martinez Guillen (Spain) for the final podium spot. Those two ladies finished fourth and fifth respectively.
