Diana Matthews has been named the next head coach of Stonehill swimming and diving, the school announced on Monday. Matthews takes over the position previously held by Matthew Distler who resigned a month ago to pursue a job outside of coaching.
Stonehill announced they would begin the transition from Division II to Division I in 2022 and completed its accelerated reclassification in summer 2025. Last fall, the school announced it would add a men’s swimming and diving program with the team’s inaugural season set to begin this fall.
“I’m truly honored to be named the head men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach at Stonehill College,” Matthews said. “I’m excited to build on the program’s tradition, develop outstanding student-athletes and create a culture where excellence in the pool, the classroom, and the community is the standard. I can’t wait to get to work. Go Skyhawks!”
Matthews arrives after most recently spending time at Division III Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, a 30 mile drive from Stonehill’s campus in Easton, MA. She has spent the last dive seasons at Regis, serving as head coach of men’s and women’s swimming & diving and the aquatics director.
During those five seasons, she earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Coach of the Year honors three times. The Regis men notably finished 2nd at the 2025 GNAC Championships.
Prior to her time at Regis, Matthews was Head Girls’ Swim Coach at Winchester High School from 2009-2021 and the Head Boys’ Swim Coach from 2010-2021. She also was the head coach at Winchester Swim & Tennis Club from 2017-2021.
The Stonehill women finished 6th out of seven teams at the 2026 NEC Championships with 299 points. Grace Idowu led the team with a 7th place finish in the 100 back (57.42) and 8th place finish in the 50 free (23.76). The men’s program will join the NEC this fall.
