The Rose Bowl Aquatic Center (“RBAC”) has announced that it plans to shut down temporarily, beginning on April 1, 2027, in preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2028. The Pasadena, California, facility was officially selected in September 2025 to host the Olympic diving competitions for the 2028 Summer Games.
A letter sent to the RBAC community, signed by Executive Director Melanie Sauer and Board Chair John Mothershead, specified that the Center’s programs would all be relocated to nearby facilities from April 2027 until the conclusion of the Games. The RBAC is scheduled to reopen to the public in the fall of 2028.
The announcement was also shared on Instagram.
The aquatics facility, which opened in 1990, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the non-profit RBAC. Adjacent to Brookside Park, it sits just south of the Rose Bowl stadium, also owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the Rose Bowl Operating Company. The RBAC consists of two Olympic-sized swimming pools (the competition pool and the recreation pool), a warm-water therapy pool, and locker rooms. It is home to the Rose Bowl Aquatics swim club, Rose Bowl Masters swimming, the Rose Bowl diving teams, and the Rose Bowl water polo club. It also partners with the Pasadena Unified School District to provide a Water Safety Program to the community.
Each of these programs will need to be relocated, and the RBAC is in discussions with “local schools, colleges, cities, and other nonprofit pools” to find temporary housing to minimize the disruption to the programs and to the communities they serve.
The main focus of the renovations will be upgrades to the dive tower, pools, and mechanical systems, to bring the facilities up to Olympic norms. The work will involve a collaboration among the International Olympic Committee, the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games (“LA28”), World Aquatics, RBAC, and the City of Pasadena.
The RBAC is calling this period “an investment in what comes next” and promises to continue its programming during the shutdown.
