Ben Whittaker will make his first appearance under the Matchroom Boxing banner before the year is out.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist put pen to paper on a long-term deal with Eddie Hearn’s promotional company on Monday, following the expiration of his contract with Ben Shalom’s BOXXER.
Matchroom intend to keep Whittaker active, with Hearn’s right-hand man Frank Smith recently revealing that ‘The Surgeon’ will fight four times over the next 12 to 14 months.
Smith stopped short of providing exact dates for Whittaker’s next outing, although Hearn was far more specific.
During an appearance on the Ariel Helwani show on Wednesday night, the British promoter declared that his new signing will fight again at the back end of November.
“It’s going to be the end of November, we are going to be announcing a new show shortly,” said Hearn when asked when Whittaker will fight next.
“We need to get him out quickly. I don’t want to wait until next year.
“We’re looking for a top 15 guy in the world. Ben has been very inactive.
“He still hasn’t had that many fights at any sort of level, if I am honest.
“I am looking at two to three fights quickly among that world level, and then we start pushing him in with the names that I said.
“I like Willy Hutchinson, [Joshua] Buatsi, [Anthony] Yarde, obviously Callum [Smith] is our guy.
“If those guys aren’t winning world titles, there are some big fights to be made.
Hearn is aiming to get Whittaker out on November 29 in BirminghamGetty“This guy is going to put bums on seats. Everyone has an opinion on him.
“Love or hate, he doesn’t care. It is a massive coup.”
Matchroom are understood to be planning a show on November 29 in Birmingham, so this appears to be the most likely destination for Whittaker’s return.
When was Ben Whittaker’s last fight?
A quick turnaround would be welcomed with open arms by Whittaker, who hasn’t boxed since April 20.
On that night, Whittaker put his demons to bed by stopping Liam Cameron inside two rounds following a controversial inaugural encounter last October that weighed heavily on the 28-year-old’s shoulders.
In the dying embers of the fifth round, both men took a tumble over the top rope, resulting in the Wolverhampton boxer sustaining injuries that left him unable to continue.
GettyWhittaker last fought in April when he stopped Cameron[/caption]Cameron had been on the ascendancy when the fight was cut short, and insisted that Whittaker had intentionally thrown himself out of the ring.
The bout was declared a technical draw after the three judges were unable to separate the pair, thus adding the first blemish on Whittaker’s otherwise perfect 9-0-1 record.
