For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Emmie Lewis of Jacksonville, Florida has announced her commitment to swim and study at the University of South Carolina, starting in the fall of 2027. She trains year-round with the Bolles School Sharks and attends Creekside High School.
Lewis publicized the news on Instagram, writing:
I am immensely excited and blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of South Carolina! First and foremost, I would like to give thanks to God for gifting me this talent to glorify Him. A huge thank you to my family, friends, and teammates for getting me to this point because I would not be where I am today without their endless support. Also, thank you to all my former and current Bolles coaches for teaching me valuable lessons and motivating me to be my best. Lastly, I would like to thank Coach Jeff and the entire South Carolina coaching staff for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity!
The future Gamecock is a sprint freestyle specialist who also swims the 200 from time to time.
Lewis’ first target meets of the 2024-25 season came in late October and early November, when she represented her high school at Districts, Regions, and State Championships.
At Districts, Lewis helped Creekside win the 200 and 400 free relays with anchor splits of 23.62 and 52.51. She won the 100 free individually with her first-ever sub-53 result of 52.89 and was runner-up in the 50 free at 24.45, about a half-second off her best time.
Lewis continued her momentum at Regions, where she helped the 200 free relay win again, this time taking on leadoff duties with a 24.62 split. She also helped the 400 free relay secure silver with a 52.15 anchor leg. Individually, she got a little closer to her 50 free PB with a 24.35 for fourth, and sliced 0.06 off her 100 free mark to take fifth in 52.83.
She wrapped up her high school season at State, where she came 11th in both the 50 (24.29) and 100 (52.37) free. Her 100 free represented a new best by 0.46, while she was 0.29 off her 50 free standard. She went on to lead off the bronze medal-winning 200 free relay in 24.39 and anchored the fifth-place 400 free relay in 52.00.
At the beginning of December, Lewis headed to the RAFC Winter Classic, where she reunited with her club team. She had the breakthrough she’d been on the border of all season in the 50 free, breaking 24 for the first time and doing so on two occasions. She rocketed to 23.93 in prelims before lowering her time to 23.90 to take fifth in the final. She also notched a lifetime-best 1:53.77 for fifth in the 200 free and came eighth in the 100 free with a time of 52.80.
Fast forward to this season—just last month she logged a 1:52.44 best time in the 200 free to win a small high school invitational, and just three weeks ago, she shattered her 50 free PB by 0.64 (23.34) and her 100 by 0.78 (51.27) at another invite where she won all her events. This sets her up for a blockbuster season with Districts, Regions, and State all on the horizon this month.

50 Freestyle: 23.34 100 Freestyle: 51.27 200 Freestyle: 1:52.44South Carolina, guided by head coach Jeff Poppell, delivered a strong showing at the 2025 SEC Championships, finishing fifth in a competitive 13-team field. The Gamecocks carried that momentum into the NCAA Championships, where they placed 24th overall with 28 team points. Senior Greta Pelzek led the way with 11 points from an eighth-place finish in the 200 fly, while junior Amy Riordan added two points with a 15th-place result in the 200 back. Junior diver Sophie Verzyl accounted for the final 15 points on the boards, earning ninth in the 1-meter and 11th in the 3-meter events.
At the conference meet, where ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ finals are offered, it took times of 22.40, 48.82, and 1:46.68 to score in her main events. According to the team’s 2024–25 depth chart, she would have ranked seventh in the 50 free, 15th in the 100 free, and 16th in the 200 free, and she still has two full seasons to improve her personal bests before arriving on campus.
Lewis joins Paige Stephanoff, Maryellen Lewis, Madeline Ryan, Ella Cooper, and Libby Helmer in committing to South Carolina’s Class of 2031.
