Australian World Record holder Cameron McEvoy recently announced via his Instagram story that he has started training for the 100 freestyle, specifically to race on Australia’s 4×100 freestyle relay.

McEvoy first spoke about the idea back in May, when he told The Sydney Morning Herald that he would not be racing at Pan Pacs. He said that the 100 free was not on his radar this year, but that it had crossed his mind, and the prospect of beating the American men in Los Angeles might tempt him into training.

The Aussies last beat the United States back in 2000 at their home Olympic Games in Sydney. The Americans have won the last three Olympic Golds in the event, and will be looking for their 4th gold on American soil in 2028.

He said “I am very interested in how it would go if I did it. If I can throw a little bit of 100 metre stuff in in the time being, that’d be great. As long as it works around the 50. I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about it. There’s a lot to take into account. I also have no data in terms of how a 100 metre would go based on my current model. I’ll have a think about it.”

Well, he thought about it, and on July 30th, just one day after the conclusion of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, he posted on his Instagram story that he had officially begun training for the event.

He posted a picture of his website with text over it stating “First block for some 100m experimentation into the end of the year posted.

Wanting to add the 4×100 at short course if things work out.

First 4 weeks of the plan posted”

McEvoy’s training has been covered extensively over the years. He has a bachelor’s degree in physics and math, and uses a very data oriented approach to training and performance. He has spoken at length about his training with SwimSwam in the past.

SwimSwam asked McEvoy why he chose now to add the event to his training.

“A few things, but mainly because we are mid Olympic cycle and I’ve been investigating 50m specialty work for 4 years now,” McEvoy said. “So I want a small detour to have some fun playing around with some real outside the box ideas for a 100m in a relay to have a break from the same 50m only work mentally.”

McEvoy hasn’t raced a 100 freestyle since October of 2023 when he swam 49.21 at the Queensland Championships. He used to be one of the top 100 freestylers in the world, however, and in February 2016, he spoke with SwimSwam about his training, which at the time was focused on the 100 and 200 freestyle.

Even 10 years ago, he still viewed training through a physics lens, stating, “A nice analogy to this is found in mathematics and is called the triangle inequality. The triangle inequality basically says that the sum of the two smaller sides of a triangle will always be bigger than the largest side of the triangle (The hypotenuse). So this is how I see my training for the 100 and the 200 freestyle – the sum of all the little individual improvements in training will be bigger than the overall improvement in a race.”

“This is because when you train for the 100 and 200, you have to be almost perfect in timing when to focus on distance work and fitness and when to introduce race specific paces into training. There is a fine line that if you are on one side, it will give you nice speed for the 100 but make your 200 suffer in the closing stages of the race, and conversely, if you are on the other side you will have a nice 200 but may not have the easy speed needed for the first 50 of a 100 freestyle. I’m not sure if this is making coherent sense but it is how I imagine my 100/200 training.”

McEvoy will be juggling the same type of challenge with adding the 100 free back to his training schedule, even if he is only planning on adding it for the relay, but he has made it clear that the 50 is still his focus.

If it all works out, though, we could see McEvoy in a 100 freestyle as early as September 30th, the day of the men’s 100 freestyle event at the Australian Short Course Championships.
