The Starter the Cubs Need, More Ugly History, Yankees Shock, Delightful Dumper, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

There have certainly been times over the last couple years where I would not have expected to ever be saying this, but it’s absolutely true right now: Thank God Jameson Taillon is starting for the Cubs today.

In the 34.1 innings after he returned from his calf injury in August, Taillon posted a 1.57 ERA, with excellent peripherals. Throw in the 4.0 scoreless innings he threw in Game Three of the Wild Card Series, and it’s not hard to say he’s the guy you’d want taking the mound in a game to stave off elimination. Sure, you have to then figure out what to do on Thursday and Saturday, but those are problems quite literally for another day. The Cubs just need to think about winning today, and at least they finally have Taillon going again. He faced the Brewers thrice this season, by the way, with one clunker and two dominant outings. Meanwhile, the Brewers okey-doked and wound up saving Quinn Priester for today’s potential clincher. He’s been quite good for them, so, yeah, hard to criticize the move. It was just … smart. The Cubs have had intermittent success against Priester this year, though, so hopefully they’re on him today. When we talked about the Cubs’ ignominious postseason history (13 straight games scoring 3 or fewer runs, an MLB record), we didn’t have this one in there:

— Just Baseball (@JustBB_Media) October 7, 2025 So. You know. Hooray. Cubs offense making all kinds of history. The Blue Jays started smacking the Yankees around again last night for the third straight game, and I started to think about how much I didn’t want it to be a preview of what was happening in the Cubs-Brewers series. But then a crazy thing happened:

— New York Yankees (@Yankees) October 8, 2025 … so maybe we DO want Cubs-Brewers to proceed like that! I guess I’ll keep it in mind if the Cubs go down by five runs at any point later today. A huge moment for the Yankees, but, in particular, for Judge:

Aaron Judge was destined to meet the moment in October. And what a moment: 100 mph, 6 inches off the inside corner — a near-impossible pitch to drive — that clanged off the foul pole for a season-saving homer. Column on the night Judge rose, free at ESPN: t.co/cBLTOTFWxh pic.twitter.com/dY9Dg3z3zP

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 8, 2025 The only shame in the Blue Jays’ loss is that an incredible Vladimir Guerrero Jr. moment may get lost to time instead of remembered forever. No, I don’t mean yet another homer and beautiful bat flip (though he did do that again) – I mean this unbelievable “slide” and score:

— Torchs (@mtorchs) October 8, 2025 So the Yankees stay alive and we have four playoff games today for the last time this season:

Today is the last day of the year with four Major League Baseball games — and all four are potential clinchers. The schedule:Seattle (up 2-1) at Detroit, 3:08p ETMilwaukee (2-0) at Chicago, 5:08pToronto (2-1) at New York, 7:08pPhiladelphia at Los Angeles (2-0), 9:08p

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) October 8, 2025 Meanwhile, the Mariners beat the Tigers to get on the verge of a clinch, with the help of a Cal Raleigh homer. That’s not such an outlier event, since he did it 60 times in the regular season. The outlier is this:

The guy who retrieved Cal Raleigh's 61st home run was wearing a shirt that said "DUMP 61 HERE"…and a shirt underneath that said "DUMP 62 HERE"Then he got to meet Cal after game! pic.twitter.com/wlk5Vy3Bkg

— Seattle Mariners (@Mariners) October 8, 2025 The guy was a Mariners fan in a sea of Tigers fans in Detroit, wearing a shirt specifically asking for that home run to happen and THE BALL CAME TO HIM. And then he was prepared with an incrementally higher shirt underneath? Guy is a legend, and the whole story is delightful.
