Vanderbilt vs. North Florida (Women Only)
October 4, 2025 Nashville, TN Team Scores: Vanderbilt – 160, North Florida – 101 Full ResultsVanderbilt University kicked off its competition season in style with a decisive home victory over the University of North Florida on Saturday. This marks Vanderbilt’s sixth consecutive dual meet win against the Ospreys.
The Commodores won eight events over the course of the day, taking home six individual victories and two relay victories, to bring the final score to 160-101 in Vanderbilt’s favor.
Vanderbilt freshman Elayne Chen put on a strong performance in her collegiate debut, prevailing in two individual events. Chen narrowly won the 200 free, touching in 1:55.36 to edge out North Florida runner-up Amelia Hildebrand by just .04. She also clinched the victory in the 500 free, charging into the wall over four seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Merritt Zieminick and clocking a time of 5:10.37.
Earlier in the meet, Zieminick had picked up her first victory of her collegiate career, winning the 1000 free in 10:40.10, over ten seconds faster than her time at last year’s season opener (10:50.68).
The Commodores look to have put together a strong backstroke group for this season, going 1-2-3 in both the 50 and 100 back. Sophomore Aubrey Hull claimed the top spot in both events, posting times of 26.51 and 57.53, respectively, with her 100 back time being about two seconds off of where she was this time last year. Racing in behind Hull in both events were senior Quinlan Hinerfeld (27.22/58.50) and freshman Sadie Suppiger (27.75/58.73).
Last season, Hull set the program record in the 100 back (53.49), and despite being a few seconds off of her personal best in both races, is currently maintaining a hold on her position as the team’s top backstroker.
Hull’s performances at the competition marked the first time she has won multiple races in a dual meet and handed her a total of 10 victories between the start of last season and now, the most of anyone on the team.
The Ospreys ceded the first four events of the meet to the Commodores, picking up their first victory of the day in the 50 breast thanks to junior Ashley Kirby throwing down a time of 29.81. She was notably the only swimmer in the field to go under 30 seconds.
Kirby followed up her performance with another win, taking home the title in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.69, almost a full second ahead of runner-up Melissa Cowen (1:05.63). Kirby’s time was notably over three seconds faster than where she was last year at this point in the season.
Cowen, a junior at Vanderbilt, also placed 3rd in the 50 breast in 30.49, which tied her for 10th on the Commodores’ all-time top times list.
Turning in a series of top performances for North Florida was junior Riley McCormick, who snagged three individual event victories. She won the 50 fly (26.01), 100 fly (57.80) and 100 free (53.65).
