You might hear some anglers using the word turnover – What does turnover mean? In warmer water lakes, ( like ours ) water at the surface cools down and becomes colder or as cold as the layer of water at the bottom of the lake. The result is the two layers mix, creating a fairly uniform water temperature. The fall turnover action can result in bottom sediments being stirred up by the water movement. When this happens, The fall bite is on! So go get bit.
Blue Lakes- The Upper Blue Lake has been producing some very nice Bass. With the drop in temperature, the Bass have become more active. The favorite prey for the Bass on Blue Lakes are Sunfish, Blue Gill, and Baby Bass. So if you are fishing with a lure that resembles them you will do very well. Cover a lot of water, make long casts at different angles around cover. Also several anglers have done quite well fishin’ the drop shot rig. The Narrows area always produces some nice Bass drop shottin’. The trout fishin’ has also been very good. Especially with the lake being stocked last week! The cooler weather brings the Trout up to the surface. So lures like a Rooster Tail, Super Duper, Spoon, or Cast Master are working well. Good luck!
Clear Lake -. The hot lures right now is the Trash Fish Swimbait and yo-yoing a LV500 lipless crank bait. Although some anglers are continuing to have success fishin’ old classics like dropshottin’ and deep running crank baits . Most of the bass are being caught mid lake and to the south.
The catfishing on Clear Lake is really good. Many are being caught under and along docks. The Library Park area and many of the docks along Hwy. 20 are good places to fish. The Catfish have followed the bait fish up into the shallower water. Chicken livers, night crawlers, and drifting live crawdads with a bobber has been working well.
Lake Mendocino – The largemouth and smallmouth fishin’ is pretty good right now. A variety of lures will produce fish. Sweet Beavers, Baby Brushhogs, Lizzards, and drop shottin’ Robo Worms have been your best bet for fishin’ off the bottom. Crankbaits, lipless crank baits, chatter baits and swim baits have all been working well. The key is to watch your electronics. When you find the fish, take your time, and cover the area throughly. Be sure to make two to three casts to every spot. Anglers that have been fishin’ the river channel have been catching some nice catfish and an occasional striper. Drift a night crawler with a bobber or fishin’ an anchovy off the bottom has been working the best.
Other places to fish – I have continued to hear good reports of the stripers bite being very good right now in the Petaluma River. I have not ever fished this waterway but, it sounds like they are catchin’ them like the old good days of Lake Mendocino.. Huh-mm, Stripers make for some great fish tacos. Also this week the east fork of the Russian River near the Potter Valley Bridge was stocked with several hunderd rainbows. Congrats to fish and Game for making this stretch of the Russian River such a wonderful fishery once again!
