ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sentencing dates have been set for those responsible for the deadly arson in Rochester that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old.
Tiakayla and Taquida Hendrix will be sentenced on Nov. 3. Roy Chambers is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 1.
The Hendrix sisters intentionally set fire to a home on Portland Avenue in Rochester in July of last year. Chambers assisted them in the act. Malakai Stovall, 5, died from his injuries.
In September, a jury found Taquida Hendrix guilty of second-degree murder and first degree arson in the deadly house fire. Her sister Tiakayla and Chambers pleaded guilty to second-degree arson in August, and Tiakayla took the witness stand against her sister during Taquida’s trial.
According to Tiakayla, the sisters were seeking revenge on people who beat up their father earlier in the day. Tiakayla testified that they targeted the duplex because they believed the attackers lived there, but set the fire on the wrong side, resulting in the child’s death. The fire started around 2 a.m. while Malakai was home with a babysitter. Firefighters pulled Malakai from the home, but he was seriously injured and later died at the hospital.
