Ryder Cup announcer apologises to Rory McIlroy and quits after leading crass chant ...Middle East

Sport by : (talksport) -

The emcee for the first hole at the Ryder Cup has stepped down for leading an expletive laden chant about Rory McIlroy.

Actor and comedian Heather McMahan appeared to have helped stoke the hostile atmosphere at Bethpage Black by encouraging the chanting of ‘f*** you Rory’ on the opening tee.

Multiple reports state that McMahan extended an apology to the Team Europe star before stepping down from her duties.

Videos have also circulated on social media showing her leading the chants.

McIlroy was met with the abuse as soon as he walked out on the first tee, where he responded by blowing a kiss.

However, things turned ugly in the afternoon four ball session with the disgusting abuse going too far.

The 36-year-old and his playing partner Shane Lowry took the brunt of the abuse as they repeatedly clashed with fans on their way round.

His afternoon match was held up a number of times as appeals for calm – some from opponent Justin Thomas – were made.

McIlroy’s wife Erica Stroll reportedly had to leave the course at one point in the afternoon.

European captain Luke Donald accused the home crowd of crossing the line on what was a fractious day.

Donald said: “It was loud, it was raucous.

“What I consider crossing the line is personal insults and making sounds when they are trying to hit on their backswings or very close to when they are trying to go into their routines. That did happen a little bit.”

Whether it was an attempt to get inside the heads of the European team or not, it clearly just fuelled the fire as they hold a staggering 11.5 to 4.5 lead.

Team Europe on course for record victory

They now have the chance to complete their first victory on US soil since 2012 and only the fifth since the team was expanded to include continental players in 1979.

They may even be eyeing a chance to eclipse their record nine-point winning margin, achieved in 2004 and 2006.

McIlroy said: “People can be their own judge of whether they took it too far or not. I’m just proud of us for being able to win today with what we had to go through.”

Team USA vs Team Europe clashes

It wasn’t just with the fans that things turned edgy, as Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood‘s match with Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler turned nasty.

DeChambeau screamed in the face of Fleetwood after his partner Rose had complained about DeChambeau’s caddy Greg Bodine walking across the line of his putt – with players and caddies getting involved in the spat.

“I was ready to hit my putt,” Rose said. “I didn’t feel like that space was being honoured. I made my feelings known. Asked him to move.

“Maybe not as politely as I could have done, but in the scenario, it’s coming down the stretch, we both have a lot on our minds and it’s intense out there.”

Bradley hits back

Woeful Team USA captain Keegan Bradley, who got 0/10 in talkSPORT’s ratings, hit back at suggestions his players had fuelled the abuse.

Bradley has notably been trying to rally fans throughout the week and ran down the 18th fairway with a giant US flag on the final practice day.

Collin Morikawa, meanwhile, said he hoped fans would bring ‘absolute chaos’.

“Ryder Cups are wild I don’t appreciate those words that you just said,” retorted Bradley in a press conference. “I know what you’re trying to do.

Bradley is on course to be one of the worst Ryder Cup captains in historyGetty

“The Ryder Cup is full of passionate fans, they’re full of passionate players.

“That isn’t right. I thought the fans were passionate. I wasn’t at Rome but I heard a lot of stories that Rome was pretty violent as well.

“But the fans of New York, from what I have seen, have been pretty good.

“You’re always going to have a few people that cross the line and that’s unfortunate.”
