Chicago Bears Keys to Victory Against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 4 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bears are heading to Sin City this weekend to take on the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Chicago is coming off a convincing victory against the Dallas Cowboys last week. If the Bears can replicate that success against Vegas this week, they can head into the bye week at 2-2. All things considered, entering the bye week at .500 seems like an early-season victory for Ben Johnson and the Bears, especially if they beat the Raiders in a similar fashion as they did the Cowboys.

Here’s what Chicago needs to do to get the job done against the Raiders this week.

Bears Keys to Victory

Pressure on Geno Smith

According to SumerSports, the Raiders are tied for second in the league for most sacks allowed, with 12 through three games, and they allow a 9.92 sack rate (29th). Chicago’s defense is coming off its best performance of the season (14 points allowed, 4 takeaways, 3 interceptions, 2 sacks, 7 QB Hits) and should be looking to take another step forward against a vulnerable Raiders unit.

The Raiders haven’t been able to run the football this season, ranking dead last in EPA/Rush (-0.26), which has placed more pressure on Geno Smith, who has four interceptions in three games, and a 3.31 interception rate, which ranks 28th in the league. While Smith has hit the deep ball and ranks second in the NFL in passing yardage with 831 yards, his pressure-to-sack rate (23.1) ranks 34th among quarterbacks, and his five turnover-worthy plays rank 38th, per Pro Football Focus.

Chicago’s defense intercepted Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott three times last week, and it should be looking to do the same this week in Las Vegas.

Don’t Let Ashton Jeanty Have His Breakout Day

Rookie running back Ashton Jeanty hasn’t gotten off to the start Raiders fans hoped for when the team selected him sixth overall this spring. The former Boise State running back has rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown on 47 attempts, barely cracking the three-yard-per-attempt mark at 3.1 through his first three NFL games.

Much of that has to do with the Raiders’ offensive line, which ranks 32nd in the league in run block win rate (ESPN). Chicago’s rush defense has been mediocre (at best), ranking 17th in the league in rushing EPA per play. Despite ranking in the middle in EPA/Rush, Chicago has allowed opponents 418 yards on the ground through three games, which ranks 27th in the league.

There’s undoubtedly some vulnerability in Chicago’s defense this week. Still, the available data comes against teams with significantly better run-blocking units than the Raiders’ unit they will see this week. Chicago’s Week 1 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings, ranks seventh in run block win rate. The Detroit Lions, Chicago’s Week 2 opponent, ranks 26th. And the team’s Week 3 opponent, Dallas, ranks eighth.

Taking advantage of Vegas’ deficiencies in the run-blocking department and limiting Jeanty should set the tone for Dennis Allen’s defense to dial up pressure on Geno Smith.

Protect Caleb Williams

I said it last week in this space: Caleb Williams has been lethal this season when kept clean. Last week, the Bears’ offensive line turned in their best pass-blocking effort of the season, with Williams taking zero sacks. This helped the second-year quarterback exploit a porous Cowboys secondary en route to NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

With Maxx Crosby leading the charge, Vegas’ pass rush will be much better than the Cowboys’ last week. The Raiders have a 42 percent pass rush win rate this season, which ranks 12th in the league—versus Dallas’ 26th-ranked pass rush win rate. Maxx Crosby is winning his pass rush attempts at a 22 percent clip this season, which ranks 15th in the league.

Clearly, Chicago’s offensive line will have a taller task on Sunday in keeping Williams upright. It’s worth noting that Vegas’ defense has been vulnerable to quarterbacks doing damage with their legs this season. Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert ran it nine times for 31 yards in Week 2. And in Week 3, Marcus Mariota had six carries, 40 rushing yards, and a touchdown for the Washington Commanders. We know that Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has that tool in his bag, which makes it worth keeping an eye on when the game kicks off on Sunday.
