Syrian transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa held a series of meetings with European leaders on the sidelines of his visit to New York to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Most of the talks focused on supporting Syria’s political transition and economic recovery.
This marks the first time in 60 years that a Syrian president has taken part in the UNGA, since former president Nureddin al-Atassi in 1967, and the first time a Syrian head of state participates in the high-level week of the Assembly, held from September 22 to 30.
Al-Sharaa met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, according to the Syrian presidency.
In a post on X on September 23, von der Leyen said she had a “useful exchange” with al-Sharaa on the challenges Syria faces in its transitional phase. She stressed that the European Union “continues to support a genuine, inclusive, and peaceful transition, led by Syrians and free from harmful foreign interference.”
“We are committed to enhancing our political dialogue, addressing urgent humanitarian needs, and supporting Syria’s social and economic recovery and reconstruction,” she wrote.
Following al-Sharaa’s meeting with Meloni, the Italian Prime Minister’s office said in a statement that the talks provided an “opportunity” to reaffirm Italy’s support for the reconstruction of a stable and sovereign Syria, including through Italian business investments in sectors of mutual interest.
Meloni highlighted her government’s commitments in the field of “development cooperation” and stressed the need to safeguard the inclusion and protection of all members of Syrian society, “starting with minorities such as Christians.” She also underscored the importance of ensuring the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb expressed his support for Syria’s political transition toward democracy in a post on X, saying, “It is important to include all minorities.”
