Jaguars ‘hopeful’ as $1.4bn stadium relocation deadline looms with two rival cities awaiting decision ...Middle East

The Jacksonville Jaguars need to find a new home for 2027.

A $1.45 billion renovation of EverBank Stadium broke ground in February and is on course to be completed in time for the 2028 season.

The Jags will continue to play at their current home for the rest of the current campaign and 2026, albeit at a reduced capacity, but will need to relocate for a year in 2027 while the 63,000-seater arena is completed.

Both Orlando and Gainesville have submitted bids to host the franchise and NFL owners were expected to vote on the issue in May, with a decision now expected in October.

Jaguars president Mark Lamping sat down with talkSPORT in London and explained why the process had taken time.

“We seem to be narrowing down, but it’s not as easy as many people might assume,” he told Brian T. Smith.

“You have to go through the exact same process on a lease for one year that you have to go through for our lease for 30 years, so we’re replicating the process we went through to get our stadium deal and new lease in Jacksonville approved.

“We have to go through that same process. So ultimately you need 75 percent of the teams to agree that in our case you should play in Orlando or you should play in Gainesville, but we’re certainly hopeful that we’re reaching the end of that process.”

Orlando and Gainesville bid to host Jaguars

Orlando’s Camping World Stadium hosted the 2025 NFL Pro Bowl Games and is undergoing a $400 million upgrade.

Ben Hill Griffin Stadium — better known as The Swamp — is the home of the University of Florida Gators.

Of the two options, Gainesville is closest — around 75 minutes from Jacksonville.

The Swamp is iconic but a lack of parking infrastructure and sharing the field with the Gators are obstacles.

Orlando is over two hours away and boasts better parking, with no full-time tenant.

It has hosted pro football with the Orlando Guardians (XFL) and Florida Tuskers (UFL) both calling it home in recent years.

Shad Khan looks to the future

The new stadium is part of owner Shad Khan’s vision to create one of the NFL’s best franchises both on and off the field.

“When we got here in 2013, there used to be surveys that asked which NFL team you cheer for, and the Jaguars were 31 out of 32. Now we’re consistently in the top three,” he told The Observer.

The refurbishment is being branded a ‘Stadium of the Future’ and was approved in a 32-0 vote in October 2024.

“The NFL believes in Jacksonville,” Khan said. “I believe in Jacksonville, and I know our fans and the people throughout the community believe in Jacksonville.

“So now we’re about to make magic happen in Jacksonville.”

Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan is fully behind the project, which keeps the team downtown as others like the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears head for the suburbs.

“The truth is this is a can-do city, and I think we showed it again tonight with a 32 to nothing vote from the NFL,” Deegan said. “This is going to be an amazing ride for our city to be able to create the Stadium of the Future.

“A great night for Jacksonville, and I couldn’t be more grateful. At the end of the day, it does mark a significant moment for us and a movement into the construction phase of this process, which is going to be exciting to watch.

“We are a city on the rise, and the Jaguars are a big part of that. I can’t wait to take that big victory lap.”

The redevelopment is expected to transform the surrounding area with the ultimate goal of bringing the Super Bowl to Jacksonville.
