MUST-SEE: Ben Johnson’s NFL on NBC Interview With Tony Dungy ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Ben Johnson is a fascinating person to listen to when it comes to talking football.

Even as the flu bug attacks, the Chicago Bears are riding high entering their Week 17 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. They officially clinched a playoff spot last week. And on Saturday night, the Bears also claimed their first NFC North title since 2018. Given their success, you can expect to see (and hear) from more players and coaches in the coming days and weeks leading into their playoff run (and possibly beyond).

First up is Ben Johnson. The first-year head coach sat down for an interview with Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy. Johnson and Dungy discussed the team’s growth, quarterback Caleb Williams’ development, and more. I snagged a few quotes that stood out to me and shared the entire video interview below. The run time on it is 19 minutes and 48 seconds, but it is well worth your time.

BEN JOHNSON SHARES WHAT HE LEARNED FROM DAN CAMPBELL: “The one thing I learned from Dan Campbell, and he always said this to me, was ‘a head coach is only as good as his staff.’ So it was really important that I nailed these hires, especially in Year 1. And so we did our due diligence on everybody.”

BEN JOHNSON ON HIS COACHING STAFF: “We have a really good mix of youth, experience, ideas, and guys who are excellent on the grass that bring energy. Antwaan Randle El has played a critical role in what we’ve done here. Grew up in Chicago. This means something to him bringing some glory back to this city. I can’t say enough about how much of an impact this whole coaching staff has had, not only on me, but this entire building.

A LOOK AT THE BEARS POTENTIAL PATH TO THE NO. 1 SEED

BEN JOHNSON ON CALEB WILLIAMS: “Everybody, they first talk about the arm talent, they talk about the ability to create and extend. And certainly, that’s something that jumps off the take. What I’ve been blown away with is his competitive drive. This guy loves football. He wants to be great. He’s going to stop at nothing but to be great. And I think that’s a great starting point for any competitor in this league. Because he is wired that way, he’s opened himself up to coaching. We meet on a daily basis to go over practice tape, game tape, what are we trying to get done that week, how can we get better, and he’s being critical of himself. He knows he is only scratching the surface of what he is capable of right now. That’s why when I talk about our best days are to come, I just see this guy getting better and better every week.”

ON DENNIS ALLEN AND HIS IMPACT: “Dennis Allen has been incredible for me. Not just from a defensive perspective, but the experience he has as a former head coach has been overwhelming. He’s done a phenomenal job with me. We sit down on a daily basis and we talk about, not just the defense, but the entire team and the direction we’re looking to go.” David Banks-Imagn Images

Watch Ben Johnson’s NFL on NBC Interview With Tony Dungy

There are so many other things I wanted to clip out, but I would rather you pop in the video and watch it in its entirety. After watching Matt Nagy and Matt Eberflus trip over their own words in press conferences and in interview settings, hearing Ben Johnson talk ball is truly refreshing.
