Ugly Sweep, Tiebreaker Status, Tucker, Shaw, Taillon, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

That Bears game was FUN, man. Needed that after the Cubs getting swept, and after the first two Bears games being so un-fun.

It was long ago a foregone conclusion, but yesterday made it official: the Cubs have been eliminated from the NL Central race, and the Brewers are once again the division winners. Bully for them. As for the Cubs, I guess they really needed today’s off-day. Not only did yesterday yield a four-game sweep at the hands of the Reds – their first four-game losing streak of the season – it also just about ended the Cubs’ chance at the tiebreaker against the Padres for the top Wild Card spot. You may recall that the two teams split their regular season match-ups, which means the tiebreaker moves next to intradivisional record, where the Padres now hold a two-game advantage on the Cubs, with one three-game intradivisional series remaining for each team. So the Cubs can’t pass the Padres in that tiebreaker short of sweeping the Cardinals to finish the year, while the Padres get swept by the Diamondbacks (even if they tied the Padres on that one, the next tiebreaker is intraleague record (not interleague), and the Padres are blowing the Cubs away on that one). So, that is all to say, the Cubs need to stay ahead of the Padres over these final six games. They are up by three, so even if they merely split the games, they’d need only one Padres loss to lock it up. And if the Padres split, the Cubs would need a measly one win against a cratering Mets team or a giving-up Cardinals team, all at home. Come on, guys. If you were wondering why Matt Shaw didn’t start yesterday, or pinch-hit/pinch-run in the 9th in a one-run game, it’s because he was not with the team in Cincinnati:

— The Athletic MLB (@TheAthleticMLB) September 22, 2025 Shaw had permission from the team to be away for a friend’s funeral. The Athletic reports that the friend was Charlie Kirk, the conservative political activist who was murdered in Utah two weeks ago, and whose memorial was a large event in Glendale, Arizona, held at State Farm Stadium. The tone of updates on Kyle Tucker continues to be super-duper-encouraging-not:

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) September 21, 2025 At least Jameson Taillon was great again yesterday, and looks to be in a really good spot heading toward the postseason. As things stand right now, I’d be lining him up to be my number three starter in the playoffs, with Matthew Boyd available to come into any of those first three games out of the bullpen, if he’s comfortable doing it. Back to the Reds, thanks to the sweep of the Cubs, they now hold all the cards in the race for the final playoff spot:

Essentially, you can add 0.5 a game to anyone chasing the #Reds. I’m like 95% sure they hold all tiebreakers among Mets, DBacks and Giants. So everyone behind them, has to outplay them by 1 more than they’re back.Reds go 3-3Mets have to go 4-2DBacks have to go 5-1Giants…

— Bryce Spalding (@bryce_spalding) September 22, 2025 That spot doesn’t so much matter for the Cubs’ postseason run – the Cubs will first be playing the Padres (hopefully in Chicago), and then the Brewers in the divisional round. The Cubs would face that final Wild Card team if and only if they won their way to the NLCS. MORE CUBS FROM BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
