With his goal against Napoli, Erling Haaland went to 50 goals in the Champions League in just 49 games, breaking the record for reaching the milestone in the fewest appearances.
You might be bored of reading about Erling Haaland breaking goalscoring records.
Well, tough, because he’s done it again.
The Manchester City striker’s goal against Napoli on Thursday took him to 50 in the UEFA Champions League, reaching the milestone in just 49 games. That’s 13 fewer than Ruud van Nistelrooy, who previously held the record after reaching his half-century in the competition in 62 games.
Haaland obliterated the record for fastest to 50 goal involvements in the competition in November last year (44 games), and now he has the same record for goals only.
It was a fast start to life in Europe’s biggest club competition too. On his Champions League debut for Salzburg on 17 September 2019, a then 19-year-old Haaland scored a hat-trick against Genk.
His second appearance saw him come off the bench to find the net against Liverpool at Anfield in a 4-3 defeat, before scoring three times across back-to-back games against Napoli. In fact, Haaland found the net in each of his first five games in the Champions League, scoring eight goals.
Haaland’s penchant for the UCL continued at Borussia Dortmund, scoring twice in his first appearance for BVB in the competition against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 to leave him with 10 goals in his first Champions League campaign. The only other player to reach double figures in the competition that season was Robert Lewandowski (15 goals).
Overall, Haaland scored in nine of his 13 Champions League games for Dortmund (15 goals), with two of the four games he failed to score in coming against Man City in the quarter-finals in 2020-21.
Just over a year later, Haaland took ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ quite literally and headed to the Etihad to see if his goals could also lead him to ultimate success in the competition.
It worked. He scored 12 goals in 12 games as City went all the way to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time in 2022-23. Haaland didn’t score after the quarter-final stage, though did find the net five times in one game against RB Leipzig in the last 16.
Haaland’s scoring rate in the Champions League has slowed a bit since. He had scored 14 times in his previous 21 appearances prior to Thursday, but in truth he was always likely to get to 50 goals with time to spare to claim the record for fewest games to do so after such a rapid start.
Viz by Jonathan ManuelHis most profitable opponents have been Leipzig and Sevilla, against whom he has scored six goals.
It brings him level with Thierry Henry in joint-ninth for total Champions League goals, though Haaland still has quite a way to go in hunting down the record for most Champions League goals.
Cristiano Ronaldo sits on top with 140, ahead of Lionel Messi (129), Lewandowski (105) and Karim Benzema (90).
If anyone will fancy themselves to climb that mountain, though, it’s Haaland. At just 25 years old he has plenty of seasons ahead of him, and at his current scoring rate, would pass Ronaldo after another 85 games.
