For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Madelyn Cassidy of Woolwich, New Jersey will stay local for her collegiate career, as she is heading to Rutgers University next fall. The Kingsway Regional High School senior, a backstroke and sprint free specialist, swims for Jersey Wahoos in Mount Laurel, NJ.

I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my academic and athletic career at to Rutgers University. A huge thank you to my family, friends, and all of my coaches who helped and supported me throughout the years. I am so incredibly thankful for this opportunity! Can’t wait for the next 4! GO SCARLET KNIGHTS!!

Cassidy concluded her 24-25 short course season at the Speedo Southern Premier, hitting 3 personal bests, all of which came from winning the B-final. She swam a 23.39 in the 50 free, 55.21 in the 100 fly, and broke both 2:00 barrier in the 200 back for the first time with a 1:59.84. Her highest finish came in the 100 back, where she took 8th with a time of 56.85—slightly off her PB of 55.79, which was set at the Middle Atlantic Senior Champs in 2024.

Most recently, she competed at Futures in Greensboro. Her meet was highlighted by a personal best and 17th place finish in the 50 free (26.84), along with a PB in the 100 fly (1:03.20). She also helped the Jersey Wahoos to a 4th place finish in the 400 free relay by way of her 59.19 lead off leg, and split a 2:10.27 in the 800 free relay to help her team finish 5th.

Best times (SCY):

100 back: 55.79 200 back: 1:59.84 50 free: 23.39 100 free: 51.15 200 free: 1:52.12 50 fly: 25.49 100 fly: 55.21

Cassidy is on the cusp of what it took to qualify for a second swim at the Big Ten Championships, with the cut off times being 53.97/1:57.84 in the backstrokes, 22.55/49.60 in the sprint frees, and a 53.45 in the 100 fly. Her arrival will be most crucial for Rutgers’ relays, as  she would have ranked 3rd and 2nd, respectively, in the 100/200 back this past season. Further, she would have led the team in the 50 free, been 2nd in the 100 free, and 3rd in the 100 fly. Their top backstroker, Shannon Meadway, has graduated.

Rutgers was 11th at Big Tens last season, with four of their top five scorers being divers. Their highest scoring swimmer, Molly Urkiel, who racked up 37 points, was a graduate student this past season. However, the Scarlet Knights have a strong class of 2030, which includes the likes of Alexis Mesina (breast), Grace Sorensen (fly), Journei Webster (free/fly), and Adele Miska (sprint free). Webster has been 54.3 in the 100 fly and 23.1/50.0 in the sprint frees, and due to Urkiel’s graduation, Mesina’s 1:01 in the 100 breast would be the quickest on Rutgers’ roster. This recruiting class could be a difference-maker in where Rutgers places at Big Tens for the next few seasons.
