Caleb Williams is making progress toward a return to the Chicago Bears.
But when will QB1 return? That is the big money question. While we do not have a concrete answer, there are signs that things are pointing in the right direction.
The latest from The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero comes via his newsletter:
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has resumed throwing, but he’s still working his way back to running full speed as he inches closer to returning from the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 2.
Williams returned to practice on a limited basis Friday. Officially, he’s listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Green Bay—a sign that, if this were a playoff game, he’s far enough along that he’d have a chance to play. (By rule, listing him as questionable also allows Williams to do a rehab workout or throwing session on the field pregame Sunday.)
…
Williams is in every meeting and has been diligent in his rehab. Depending on how he progresses, he could return sometime in the next several weeks.
Getting a limited participation practice under his belt on Friday was an important first step. The most encouraging part of Pelissero’s update is the anecdote that, if this were a playoff game, Caleb Williams would have a chance to play. To me, that signals Williams is progressing well on his rehab plan.

Another notable nugget from Pelissero’s reporting is that the Bears winning games with Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent carrying the load at quarterback has eased the pressure to push Caleb Williams back harder than necessary for an early return. In the past, we’ve seen players rush back from injury, only to complicate matters. Look no further than last year’s situation with Rome Odunze, whose attempted early return cost him more time than originally expected. All is well that ends well, but I’d err on the side of caution with the quarterback. And it sounds like the Bears are in that boat, too.
That said, Williams is listed as questionable. And because Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson is a master troll, I suppose I can’t rule out Williams playing in Week 5 against the Packers. But given our own deductive powers and reporting from a respected NFL insider, it is far more likely that QB1 returns in Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons or Week 7 against the New England Patriots in a Thursday Night Football matchup that pits him against 2024 NFL Draft classmate Drake Maye.
