Chelsea only have one ‘world champion’ worthy of the name ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

It was a tale of two Englishmen as Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich on their return to the Champions League – but the biggest difference was the teams surrounding them.

While Kane had Michael Olise tormenting any defender who came near him and Joshua Kimmich helping pull the strings, Palmer could only watch as Moises Caicedo gave away a silly penalty or Malo Gusto was caught in possession, both gifting the England captain chances he is too good not to finish.

The 32-year-old has taken 25 penalties for Bayern Munich now, and scored 24 of them, while his second goal of the game took him past David Beckham for the most Champions League goal involvements by an Englishman.

And it wasn’t just the fact of his goal either, it was its nature. Chelsea won the ball back (having just lost it in the same place) on the edge of their own penalty area, and Palmer drove forward 50 yards, bearing down on goal before deigning to allow Gusto a touch.

He so nearly had a second too, which would have set up a grandstand finish, producing the most delicate of finishes in the dying embers of the game to get Chelsea closer to a draw than they really deserved – but a VAR-assisted offside decision went against him and the Germans’ two-goal lead was restored. Chelsea could have no arguments. Bayern were by far the better side.

Robert Sanchez produced two fine saves, one from Kane and then another from Olise, just before the hour mark that many others might have conceded. Bayern’s third goal followed soon after but it could easily have been four or five. Only Palmer’s brilliance kept close it.

“If other countries had all these players, we’d be admiring them even more!”

And even if England’s present – and perhaps even past – overcame its future on this occasion, it’s hard not to get excited about the prospect of Palmer and Kane combining at World Cup next summer, but for now they are still playing in very different outfits.

“But I feel like we’ve shown that we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. I think we deserved more.”

Half right, Cole. You deserved more. Because in a team that bears that title “world champions”, he is the only one playing like he really deserves it.
