Bayern Munich 3-1 Chelsea (Chalobah OG 20′, Kane pen 27′, 63′ | Palmer 29′)
It was a tale of two Englishmen as Chelsea were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich on their return to the Champions League – but the biggest difference was the teams surrounding them.
Harry Kane returned to haunt his old London rivals Chelsea with two decisive goals, taking his tally against them to 10, while Cole Palmer was comfortably the best player on his side.
While Kane had Michael Olise tormenting any defender who came near him and Joshua Kimmich helping pull the strings, Palmer could only watch as Moises Caicedo gave away a silly penalty or Malo Gusto was caught in possession, both gifting the England captain chances he is too good not to finish.
The 32-year-old has taken 25 penalties for Bayern Munich now, and scored 24 of them, while his second goal of the game took him past David Beckham for the most Champions League goal involvements by an Englishman.

— Football on TNT Sports (@footballontnt) September 17, 2025Palmer for his part was writing his name into history next to legends as well last night. On his 100th appearance for Chelsea, he bagged his 45th goal for the club. By the time Lionel Messi had 100 games for Barcelona, he only had 41.
And it wasn’t just the fact of his goal either, it was its nature. Chelsea won the ball back (having just lost it in the same place) on the edge of their own penalty area, and Palmer drove forward 50 yards, bearing down on goal before deigning to allow Gusto a touch.
The Frenchman sensibly gave it straight back to him and Palmer finished masterfully, letting the ball run across his body from right to left, delaying the shot so he could pick out a spot in the far corner of Manuel Neuer’s goal.
He so nearly had a second too, which would have set up a grandstand finish, producing the most delicate of finishes in the dying embers of the game to get Chelsea closer to a draw than they really deserved – but a VAR-assisted offside decision went against him and the Germans’ two-goal lead was restored. Chelsea could have no arguments. Bayern were by far the better side.
Enzo Maresca had tried to play down expectations for his team, insisting they are still inexperienced at this level. Trying telling that to the fans who chant “we’ve won it all” win the wake of lifting the Club World Cup in the summer. The “world champions” were overrun by Bayern at times.
Robert Sanchez produced two fine saves, one from Kane and then another from Olise, just before the hour mark that many others might have conceded. Bayern’s third goal followed soon after but it could easily have been four or five. Only Palmer’s brilliance kept close it.

“We’ve got to build the team around him,” said TNT Sports commentator Glenn Hoddle, another whose ability was often on another plain from that of his team-mates.
“If other countries had all these players, we’d be admiring them even more!”
With his patriotic hat on, it was a good game to watch: three goals by Englishmen, even the own goal was off the shins of England’s Trevoh Chalobah.
And even if England’s present – and perhaps even past – overcame its future on this occasion, it’s hard not to get excited about the prospect of Palmer and Kane combining at World Cup next summer, but for now they are still playing in very different outfits.
“When you make mistakes at the highest level, then it’s always difficult to come back in any game,” Palmer said afterwards.
“But I feel like we’ve shown that we can play against one of the best teams in the competition. I think we deserved more.”
Half right, Cole. You deserved more. Because in a team that bears that title “world champions”, he is the only one playing like he really deserves it.
