Molly-Mae fans left stunned as she tests ‘invasive’ trick to manage her periods, but says it’s a game changer at bedtime ...Middle East

MOLLY-MAE Hague has been left divided after trying a menstrual cup for the first time.

The mum-of-one previously suffered from endometriosis, but had a laparoscopy to treat it, and has only recently got back to a “normal” menstrual pattern.

Now that she has though, Molly-Mae has decided to try a menstrual cup, to see if it works for her.

The cups are folded and inserted into the vaginal canal, where they unfold to form a leakproof seal – collecting the fluid instead of absorbing it like traditional products such as tampons and sanitary towels.

But Molly, 26, admitted she’s not sure “how I feel about it”.

“I don’t know what I was expecting but I do find it incredibly invasive,” she said in a vlog on her YouTube page.

“I’ve always only ever used tampons with an applicator and this is no tampon with an applicator type situation.

“This is more a tampon, no applicator type situation!

“It was a lot more invasive, like the putting it in, taking it out type situation.

“I was like woah, I felt like I was really just exploring.”

Despite her mixed feelings, Molly said it was a huge hit when it came to bedtime.

“I did sleep with it in, because you can have it in for up to 12 hours, and absolutely zero leaking,” she said.

“Not even like one bit of remnant of period anywhere, which for me is like completely abnormal.

“And that was really amazing to wake up this morning and be like wow pyjamas are crystal clear, like this is great!”

But Molly also added she wasn’t keen on the idea of a “piece of silicone being inside of me”, but acknowledged that using a tampon is probably just as bad.

In the comments section on the YouTube, Molly’s fans urged her to keep going with the menstrual cup, to give it a proper try over a few months.

“Menstrual cups will change your life!” one wrote.

“It takes a while to get used to them but if you can manage to get them to sit right you will forget you’re wearing them all day.

When heavy periods could be something sinister

WHEN it comes to periods, there is a textbook definition of normal – but then there is also what a normal period looks like for you.

For some (lucky) people, these definitions overlap; for others, they don’t.

The NHS recognises a ‘normal period’ as losing between 30 and 60ml, or six to eight teaspoonfuls, each month. A ‘heavy’ period’ is anything more than 80ml.

Another, arguably simpler, way of working out whether your period is heavy is to count the number of pads or tampons you use.

Having to change a pad or tampon every one to two hours, or emptying a menstrual cup more often than is recommended, is a sign your period is heavy.

An NHS test can also help reveal whether your periods are heavy and if it’s worth seeing your GP.

Dr Fran Yarlett, GP and medical director at The Lowdown, said: “Heavy periods can be normal for some people.

“But if your periods have changed and become heavier, this can signify medical problems.” This could be:

Early-stage cervical cancer Fibroids (non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb) Perimenopause (the time during which your body makes the natural transition to menopause) Hypothyroidism (when the thyroid doesn’t produce enough hormones Endometriosis (tissue similar to that in the womb grows in other areas of the body)

“And so much better for the environment!”

“I’ve used a menstrual cup for about 8 years, highly recommend,” another said.

“I won’t go into all the benefits on here as it’s TMI but you’ll look back and be glad you stuck with it.”

“Honestly please try the menstrual cup for a couple of periods as you do get used to the application side of things!” a third said.

“I’ve been using one for 7 years and it has changed my life. I feel soooo secure, even going swimming, and no longer worry about things like TSS.

“It avoids so much toxic landfill and a bonus is that it saves embarrassment if you are at someone’s house and they don’t have a bathroom bin!”

While someone else praised Molly for being so open in her discussion about her menstrual cycle. “Molly, when you chat about periods it’s never TMI,” one wrote.

“I actually really really appreciate it. I don’t have a relationship with my mum, I have no sisters and few friends.

“So it’s great when you share, it simply feels like a friend is sharing her experience.

“I’m happy with all that you talk about. Another great video!”
